Lol I love Gaia. The good thing about the forum is that it has quite a set of unwritten laws on where you can be a dumb-ass spammer and where you can't. Especially the art discussion forum is relatively spam-free, though there's a lot of "omg TEACH ME TO DRAW ANIMU PLZKTHX!1121!" :/
Also, Gaia is the place where I receive the best constructive crits. For some reason or the other, the page has a lot of talented artists. :0

But I damn fawking hate it when people submit their Gaia avatars at dA. That's just dumb. They didn't create a single pixel on that thing on their own. :/

Lol I've honestly don't seen many threads like that. xD; I usually just go to the art discussion and mini-shops forum. And then I'm active in a couple of guilds and shit. And then I visited the games-discussion once but it was all just Final Fantasy and NAROOTOOOOO and shit so I didn't feel very much at home there.
