Pfff, what do you mean with mankind progress? The moral side or the technical one, or something else? Either way, it doesn't depend on what happened so many years ago basically because people never learn from others' mistakes.

Moral side obviously, the technical one is only an instrument of the former. And I'd rather say that most people don't learn from others' mistakes. It can't be generalized to the whole humanity.

Of course it can't, I'm only taking a guess based on my experience and the fact I've never seen an exception of the statement.
