Well, I'm not friendly with them then. As far as I remember, I encountered similar problems I had with GIFs.

Yeah, I can't stand GIFs. I stay on the safe side nowadays and choose PNG.

Actually some of the avatars that we use are in PNG format. PNGs support transparency.

I am sure. I had to go back and edit them when a while ago before we switched to PHPbb3. Take a look at Acarr's rank.

Then the browser that you use probably doesn't support PNG transparencies. IE7 (not any older IE's) and other web browsers can recognize PNG transparencies.
