Disabling guest editing on the wiki

Post by Cairnie »

I think it's about time that I let the members decide about this.

For some time, we get a lot of guests make contributions to the wiki. Many of them are good, but sometimes we get a bunch of gibberish linking to porn sites and what not. While I'm quick to catching them and getting them blocked, I feel that having to pick off about 8 bots in one day, all attacking the same article which I had to semi-protect, has become highly annoying, and I also feel that by limiting the ability to edit and upload files to just those who are already RaymanPC members, we can encourage them to build the wiki up in the way it should be.

You don't have to agree with me on this one, and since I'm only merely a sysop there, I'm leaving it entirely up to all of you.

I'm totally with Stacey here.

I don't see why editing is only enabled for registered users because most of the active wide-knowledge-based Rayman fans are members of this forum and don't source from other websites (I dare say RZ). Moreover, bots and kids who don't know their lefts and rights seem to frequently edit pages on the Wiki, offering nonsence (often in incoherent English) which then has to be deleted.

An alternative would be to create a check system, whereby articles would need to be checked before being validated by an admin or sysop. That way ridiculous articles could be avoided both from members of THIS forum and from other locations.

I'll try and make more of a contribution to the RayWiki next week, by the way. I promised I'd finish the Hoodlums and the R3 levels.

I personally think we should allow guests to edit the wiki, considering that a lot of useful contributions are made by non-registered users. That's the way Wikipedia works, and sysops are always there to cancel ridiculous modifications. Anyway, I'll stick to the result of the poll :)

Actually, I heard they might be changing the rules of Wikipedia a bit to prevent the same thing, as Wikipedia is often subject to idiots writing nonsense. Some computersa at my school had to be IP banned because of it...
I don't know this for sure though, I just think I heard it somewhere. :P
But still, if they really want to edit the wiki, why shouldn't they register? It's not hard, and it may encourage them to post on the forums too.

I don't think we should disable guest editing. But I have an idea:

The first few times a guest tries to edit, they have to type in a code to verify that they're an actual person, not a bot. After making five edits (proving they're not a bot), they can't make any more edits until their contributions are ratified by an admin or something. If they use crappy English and abbreviations, or if they spam or make useless edits, they get permanently banned.

I don't know much about wikis, so what I just said might be very stupid, I dunno.

Why don't disable editing of specific (attacked) articles?

So far I had to semi-protect that, the one about Globbette and the one about Robo-Pirates. :/

I can look up IPs as well but I'd rather not talk about that much.

Had another bot attack today.

Yeah, sometimes I've corrected some grammatical mistakes I've spotted but forgot to log in too but it's not a good enough reason to say no to this. Besides the pr0nbots seem to be giving you a hard time so I say yes.

Seeing that I'm bored, I'm going to try out raywiki. I'm guessing I won't get very far though.

You did a better start than some people on there A, but you've still got a lot to learn.

Oh and BTW, the game you were talking about in your new article is actually called Speed Stress. :P On and On is where you play every single course consecutively without running out of lums.

Wiki is a lot easier to learn than most people think, since it's not exactly as mind boggling at first glance as CSS.
