My laptop has completely stopped working and I am convinced that a problem with the memory module(s) is to blame. I'd just bring it back to the shop and get a new one, but the thing is, all my files and things are on it. And I want them back.

Try to open notebook (if possible) and to plug your SATA/ATA plug to working PC, maybe it would work?
