A couple of weeks ago I tried to remove the horrible outlining on the current avatar, but unfortunately a power cut prevented me from finishing. When I find enough motivation I may consider trying this again.

Yep, I'd agree. It's a little blurred though.

The image in the current rank is clearly the best, but the horrid jagged edges are responsible for its hideousness. That's why I'd suggest improving the one we use at present instead of creating an entire new avatar.

Try getting to the top rank. It takes a while, unless you're as orsum as me, that is.
