Question about Windows 7

Point given, there's still time left for the old XP to lurk around, but in time it might be wise to switch to something newer. Of course, only if you have or planning to get a hardware decent enough to take advantage of it. In any case, no one's pushing you, so you can stay with XP till the remainder of your days, if you wish.

Personally, like I mentioned earlier, I'll wait for 7's most prominent bugs to pop out and be eliminated, before I'd switch. My laptop is pretty much a lower-mid level one, but it can still run most newer games on acceptable settings and 7 is said to be quite more efficient and altogether much more polished than Vista is, even though the two SPs had fixed a great deal of issues.

Acarr, just think that Windows 7 is like Windows XP with Windows Vista's visual. It isn't obligatory for you to have Windows 7, but remember that the support of XP will end around 2014.

Stick with Windows XP. Your computer is a few years old, so 7 will run like garbage.

But I recommend you getting Windows 7, it is way less heavy.

Actually, it isn't. No really, run benchmarks on a modern computer ( 2 GB of RAM, dual core processor, good graphics cards ) and Vista will beat 7.

They just made Aero less resource hungry, that's all, but 7 isn't faster than Vista without Aero.

That's what I thought about Vista until I actually got my hands on a brand new Vista desktop. Now every computer here is Vista'd except for Megan's old PC.

I'm glad that you've had a great experience with Vista. I enjoyed the new interface too, until i installed an update and Vista refused to shutdown my laptop. So now, i haven't updated in about two years, so now Windows is even less secure then it aleady is.

It is most likely. If you've bought your current PC after 2007, it most likely came with Vista. Of course, you could also have installed XP Professional on a computer you bought then. And if you did that last thing, you can run 7, i guess. If you want to be sure, Microsoft has an "7 upgrade advisor" application. That shall tell you if you can upgrade.

7 on a Pentium 3 ? Actually, the minimum requirements say a 1 Ghz CPU, not a Pentium 3. All right, there a 1 Ghz Pentium 3's out there, but they will not run Windows 7 any good. You see, not only the gigahertz matters, but also the number of pipeline stages, the supported instruction sets, the size of the L1- and L2 cache, and a lot of other factors determine the speed of a CPU too, and as much as the number of gigahertz. Yes, you can run 7 with an Intel Atom CPU, but you won't run it any good on a Pentium 3 system. To have a comfortable experience on such an old system you'll need an Linux distribution ( or an other open source operating system that can run X ) with the XFCE desktop. 7 was just not designed for such old systems.

And you can actually run Vista on a netbook, it's only that Vista takes to much space on the hard drive, and the Eee PC and clones only had a small 4 GB SSD.

I don't exactly remember arguing that people should switch to Linux.

Maybe it was with the comment i made laughing at Microsoft because they make you pay to be able to log in remotely on a computer. But i didn't meant that you should switch to Linux and use OpenSSH, i meant this project. It's a port of OpenSSH to Windows.

But, if you'd like me to go in to detail in why you should actually use Linux ( or get a Mac, which ever you would prefer ), just drop a post. But i don't want to do it, and nobody here would really like to hear it. It'll most likely become a flamewar too.

Okay product for movie makers and designers, but way too pricy, shit customer support (trust me, I learned this one the hard way), way too few games (Football Manager works for it though, but the 3D is fucked up on mac) and compatibility problems with third party hardware. The only way I'd buy a Mac is if have to make a living by making movies or editing pictures.

That actually is a misunderstanding, i'm not saying your problems are your fault because you run Windows, but i'm frustrated by the fact that they couldn't even take the time to instert a Linux Live CD ( or another operating system that you can boot from a CD ) and back up your files. But no ? What do those morons do ? Whipe the whole thing because the Windows installation has a fault ( no, i'm not saying this to bash Windows, Linux and any other operating system that's out there, can / will get an issue some time as well ).

It seems like an software issue if they needed to reinstall the OS to get it up 'n running again.

I agree with most of your points. But the overall quality of their computers ( no, not their iPlodes ) is really good. In fact, you will spent the same amount of money for a box with such build quality and specifications ( unless you build your box yourself, of course ). And why is 3D B+fucked up on your Mac ? If i look at the specifications, i'd say with the nVidia Geforce 9400 3D should be quite decent.

But, i agree with you for the rest, the software is nice ( it just runs without BS, like most of the other OSes i've used in the past ), but it's way to restrictive : there aren't many ways to do a thing, only one. Oh, and the terminal in Mac OS X is just unbareable, i mean, i dare you to try to read lots of output in that piece of shit.

The 3D mode on Football Manager doesn't work properly.
But this is quite important for me, because the Football Manager series is the game series I play the most, by far. My record game time is about 1000 hours in FM08.
