It's been raining cats and dogs for the past 2 days.

Very unstable fall weather. Two weeks back we had constant pouring down rain for like two or three days straight, with the temperatures in the 30's (Fahrenheit) the whole time then last week getting in the 70's and sunny. (Now it's back to rain with the temperatures still managing to remain in the 70's)

That expression means it is really raining a lot.

It looks alike to a french expression. When you say "C'est un temps de chien", which means "It's a dog weather", it means that the weather is really bad (raining a lot, coldn, etc.) XD
