This is why the American car market failed. They were too busy feeding the short-term SUV craze while every other company in every other nation was developing more efficient vehicles. Heck, on the subject of earlier, a Beetle or a Mini has always gotten better gas mileage than newer cars from GMC or Ford.

On another note, my parents had a 1990 Subaru (don't know what specific model, it was just a hatchback), and it was quite nice... Until the engine completely died, and it wasn't worth the money to fix. :(
