Why wasn't Rayman 1 ever ported to the Nintendo 64? Think about it.

Look at the differences between these two; the Atari Jaguar has some comparison to the N64.(Sorry I didn't list many differences, I can't think at 1:24 in the morning.) Please help me list some more differences.

Both systems can do both 2D and 3D. Sure there are some music and sound differences.
So what do you think? Why wasn't R1 ported to the N64? Do you think it would look the same as the PS1 or Sega Saturn?

I think it's because the Nintendo 64 was released in 1996, while Rayman 1 was released in 1995.

Now, I know that Rayman 1 was ported to other portable consoles, but that was years later.

Nintendo probably didn't license it for the N64 yet plus by the time it came out they were giving it the whole "OMG SO POWERFUL 3D!!" junk. TBH I only know about 2 2D games on the N64 so far - Worms Armageddon [a port funny enough] and Dr Mario 64.

Rayman 1 on the N64 would be like Rayman 1 on the Jaguar. Not very good.

I mean the Atari Jaguar didn't have as good 3D games as the N64. AJ: Failure N64: Success It handled games in 2D better than the N64 probably.

Yoshi's story wasn't 2D.

Actually, RayFan, it's like Donkey Kong Country and Rayman Hoodlums' Revenge. It uses 2D sprites of 3D graphics. So it's not 3D at all, but definitely 2D. ;)

Pre-rendered graphics aren't 3D, indeed. But I remember Yoshi's Story had it's world 'textured' to allow zooming and scaling. So it's more comparable to Mario Kart 64, which used 2D characters (sprites) in a 3D world to keep up the framerate as it's a racing game. Yoshi's Story however, was a sidescroller and the creators meant to 'flatten' everything in the world.

The only real definition for '3D' in games is the use of polygons. Unless refering to the 'glasses' style of 3D lol.. Basically, even the oldest consoles and computers allowed polygons if the programmer was familiar with it. Think about the Commodore 64 and Atari 2600. Those had plenty of games that rendered polygons even though it weren't models or animations, more like rooms that would shift in place to make you feel you're coming closer, etc.

Oh and about Rayman 1 on N64, I suppose it's the fact that the N64 was released after Rayman 1, and the sudden 3D hype that also altered the direction of Rayman 2 as we know it!

I can see where everyone is coming from. R1 on N64 would be pretty cool... but, considering the current era, is it really worth it?

...unless you suggest porting it to N64, then to DS? THAT would be a sight to see, possibly (more like definately) going down much better than Rayman Advance. :mrgreen:

At least if the game was released on N64 with the same format as Atari Jaguar, more people could get acess to that rare version.

The version I played had a 3D environment. Sure the characters were 2D, but the environment was 3D in the same kind of way Kirby 64 Crystal Shards was.

I just played it at a hotel a few weeks ago. Maybe I as playing a different version or something newer also labeled as Yoshi's Story?

OT:

About the Rayman 1 music... something I think is occurring to me. The more I listen to it, the more I think it's true. I don't think Rayman 1 was orchestrated, I think it was mixed with MIDI and converted to wave audio.

So a bit like with the PSone Final Fantasy games, how they would record the music of the certain instruments and then filter it afterwards to change how it sounds?

That sounds a bit weird. Do you know of any games where that was definitely done? I’ve never heard of such a method.
