Why is everybody so disappointed with this game? It's a handheld port of Rayman 2. Those have never been good and there were a thousand ways this could have been butchered. I don't care how good the screenshots looked, everyone's expectations of this game were far too high.

I also cannot understand the disappointment of most people here.

It's really not god-awful. Yes, plenty of glitches and graphical idiocy, but NOTHING like the shit that was RDS. Even that was (just about) playable, so I'm actually quite happy with this port.
The framerate has stayed pretty smooth for me in general, and the gameplay still holds up quite well. (I don't see much of a change in the difficulty though.) Of course, I'm just patiently awaiting something new!

Ports in general tend to go down in critic scores as they keep being ported, and shit now it's getting even more bad reviews on metacritic.

I've recieved Rayman 3D today, but I'll only start to play tomorrow in the morning. I'll have something to entertain myself in the plane. :mryellow:

*BUMP! - Sorry for double post (Arrrgh, the mods will kill me DX'...)*

I've tried a bit of Rayman 3D already, I stopped at the Bayou but I can already give a quick resume of my current opinion:

Pros:

- Some character and object models do are remastered with better shaping, like Rayman's hair, Globox in general, bridges have more volume, kegs are rounder...
- Good control handing in overall (I also like the change of the shoot button because it is more practical)
- The 3D depth is good

Cons:

- I miss Ubisoft's rainbow logo, but nothing can be done now
- The 3D model of Rayman 3D is worse than the original one of Sega Dreamcast version
- The touch screen could have more use and a better visual
- Some sounds sometimes seem to show up incomplete when playing (or Rayman not screaming in certain cutscenes)
- Music is very loud (At least you can fix that in the options, to make SFX higher than music)
- No Globox Village :pascontent:
- No Globox Crystals
- Some fishes appear to have only one eye, wierd...
- Super Yellow Lums have a wierd look
- The eyes of the cages seem flipped upside down, or is it me?

I'm kinda busy, but I just came here to tell, that (if I remember right) Rayman 3DS was placed 3rd on the most selling 3DS games outside of Japan.
So actually, we could think, that it's just good, that this game was rushed, because it wouldn't have sold so well later, when all of the big N games (and DOA, RE...) would have been released, and then, a lot of people would still not know anything about this master piece.
And if this wouldn't have been a launch title, there wouldn't have been any good games to buy on the launch.

Got a good feeling the model used in 3D looks more like the PS2 one, also the 3DS has surround sound which is usually the default.

Well, people are expecting more because of several reasons-
1- This port was developed in-house by Ubisoft personally. It's fair to expect it to look and sound at least as good as the original, which it doesn't. At least previous ports to handhelds have their reasons for being crappy. Rayman DS was ported to a system without an analog and the system itself was arguably weaker than the N64 itself, it was outsourced and made by DC Studios. The iOS version was quite competent from what i've heard in terms of ports, but the system has no physical buttons (only touch screen), and it was developed by Gameloft apparently.

2- The 3DS is far more powerful than either Dreamcast OR PS2 and has already shown itself even at launch how incredibly capable the system can be if pushed properly. The gpu is especially more powerful, capable of producing very detailed and advanced visuals. The system is renowned for its lighting and shader effects most of all (look at Resident Evil Revelations), yet they removed even the original Rayman 2 lighting effects in Rayman 3D (even the less impressive Rayman 2 on N64 had lighting effects). And on top of all the cutbacks in visuals made, the game still chugs at a below-par framerate while the original ran at 60fps (3D effect doesn't make a difference in speed).

The fact that it's developed in-house by Ubisoft themselves on a much more powerful system, people have the right to believe the game should at least be able to perfectly replicate the game at least. Had the game been made by a more competent caring developer, Rayman 3D could have been the best looking version of Rayman 2 ever.

@StaceyW

Comparing the two side-by-side, I couldn't see any real difference in Rayman's models. Pretty much identical to the DC version i think. Not up there with Revolution.

It may be in-house Gran but as I keep saying it's been set to Ubi teams outside of France - Casablanca in Morocco and Bucharest in Romania - that didn't put enough effort into all of the DS games they worked on. Not that all the Rabbids games they made were so terrible you want to bury them in a New Mexico desert, but they weren't masterpieces either. Especially TV Party. That one was the laziest of the bunch.

In the case of DC Studios [they were British-Canadian btw] they had a long history of making really bad games too such as Bratz games, and as of now they are long dead. Obviously Ubi had a massive brainfart when they got round to choosing who to develop RDS back then.

I haven't really been playing 3D lately because I've been sticking the Rabbids DS games in for wikiing, really.

What's the point in this thread now that Rayman 3D is already out?

Oh my no, oh my no. It's the Dreamcast model. Rayman here doesn't have 3D extrusions on his shoes, his nose and hands I can visibly see each of the 16 sides which make up his nose (the PS2 using 32) and more things. Ubisoft is really lazy with Rayman right now.

Oh what do you know, I have 1,777 posts.

That's probably just a texture compatibility thing. On Rayman DS his pupils were square. :P

Just an observation: I've tried to play Rayman DS in the 3DS and the game looks even worse than the original DSs.

A lot of DS games look worse on the 3DS due to the upscaling - like WarioWare DIY for example. I can live with it since I've been a tad hooked on Rabbids Go Home on DS but yeah :/

The DS games when running in the 3DS have a feeling of emulation, it is not the same thing.

Oh well, I still need to continue my Rayman 3D.

More cons:

- No Polokus' voice in the intro (forgot to say this before)
- There are freaky graphical glitches in 2D details (like: you see in one side, but in the other side it gets invisible ; Rayman's waves of his energy spheres seem also incomplete)
- The strafe button should be in R button, not the L as in Playstation 2

Really hope people don't start comparing the fact that Rayman 3D is just Rayman 2 to companies letting paint into food supplies here, like some people are doing at RZ.
