Re: Rayman himself
Sorry if something along these lines has already been posted, but I don't really feel like looking back through 95 or so pages. What do you (or anyone) think is the most unique trait of raymans? Is it his helecopter hair, his lack of limbs, his personality or whatever. Please also say why. I'm still making up my mind as to my opinion.

Re: Rayman himself
Oh yes and by the way, how do I change the picture to the right of my posts? I'm fine with a protoon but I'm sure there are better heroes/villains. Sorry if this is a bit off topic by the way.

As concerns your on-topic question, I'd say it's his lack of limbs.

Re: Rayman himself
Thank you. I probably wouldn't of found that thread by myself.
I think I'll stick to good allegiance for now. What is your picture of by the way?
As concerns your on topic reply to my on topic question, why do your think his lack of limbs are unique (I'm not criticizing your view I just want to know).
Also, apparently his arms were originally omitted for graphical perposes (they could not easily animate them). Do you think that they have stayed with Rayman being armless (despite mow having better equipment consoles .ect ) because of the fact they set him apart from other computer game heroes.
I still haven't made up my mind as to which one I'm choosing.
As for the post 4 posts up are you asking what is the point of a dark Rayman? I suppose if there was a Rayman with the opposite attributes of Raymans he would be quite a hard boss to defeat. Throughout the series of games Rayman uses his abilities to prevail even when heavily outnumbered so another being with similar abilitys but dark alliegence would be dangerous. But surely he would have the opposite of raymans every attribute so whereas Rayman is typically Herioc, Mature and usually peaceful, a dark Rayman would be cowardly, Imature and overly violent...
...Hang on, isn't that Rayman from origins?

Re: Rayman himself
Oh, my picture is "Gangsta" Globox, it's a fancharacter I made around 5 years ago. Basically Globox drawn with rechtangle tool only. You receive a special rank if you win a Signature Of The Month competition, do better than others on the post record day etc. There is a Rayman Quiz too, but it's temporarily locked.
Well, correct me if I'm wrong, but Rayman has been known as "the limbless hero" for quite a long time now. His lack of limbs may be due to graphical reasons originally, but it became one of the key elements of the character design and some game mechanics, e.g. the telescopic fist. It is a feature that makes his easily recognizable (along with his general appearance of course) and can be utilized in various ways (Rayman 3 comes to mind; his hands being stolen in the very beginning, him kicking his own body if the player is idle etc.)

Re: Rayman himself
No corrections required. I was just wondering why a lack in animation became one of our heroes greatest traits. My point was that surely some of Raymans other traits and abilitys are just as unique (such as helicopter hair). Plus these were intended traits from the beginning.Matyuv wrote: Well, correct me if I'm wrong, but Rayman has been known as "the limbless hero" for quite a long time now. Whether or not Rayman still needed to be limbless was debated on raymanzone ( I would link it here but I don't know how to) on o thread called "Why is Rayman now the only one with detachable limbs". The For-Rayman-remaining-limbless side put forward many of the reasons you did, whereas the Agaist-Rayman-remaining-limbless side said that being limbless was no longer required, it did not need to be central to gameplay as Rayman could throw energy spheres (like in Rayman 2) and also the main point of the argument, that other characters who had been limbless in Rayman 1 were either given limbs or omitted entirely. The debate was inconclusive (mainly because very few people still use raymanzone).

Re: Rayman himself
Rayman’s limblessness is the most integral quality of his design. The helicopter hair is only seen occasionally, whereas he is visibly limbless at all times – it is his most identifiable trait. The developers actually considered giving Rayman limbs in Rayman 3, but thankfully they came to their senses – stripping their mascot of his most unique and recognisable characteristic would have been a very stupid move. The limblessness may no longer be a technical necessity, but it’s what everyone has come to expect of Rayman, and there is no reason to reinvent the basic look. At least the tweaks made between R1 and R2 and between R2 and R3 were respectful of the basic look. The point of ‘limbing’ the R2 characters and the returning R1 characters was presumably to make Rayman more unique – limbing him too would completely undermine this. Of course the games could theoretically still work with a limbed Rayman – his limblessness had hardly any impact on Rayman 2 – but it would be a huge mistake to redesign the character in that way. The disastrous Bomberman: Act Zero comes to mind.
Re: Rayman himself
I remember that thing of Rayman 3, thank godness they didn't add limbs to Rayman. Rayman would not be Rayman anymore if it had limbs.

It's strange how no-one has mentioned his personality as a unique factor yet.
Hang on. Wern't you arguing that Rayman could by made limbless on the thread on Raymanzone?

Re: Rayman himself
No, I was specifically arguing that Rayman’s limblessness was not a part of his original design. We have been told that he was originally designed with limbs and that they were removed due to technical difficulties; someone said that this was a lie because his limblessness is important to the gameplay, and I don’t think that’s true. I never advocated the addition of limbs; I simply said that the first game could still have worked with a limbed Rayman.Bithainium wrote:Hang on. Then somebody should show him this interview:(...)someone said that this was a lie because his limblessness is important to the gameplay(...)

Sorry about that...
My habit of reading only the start and end of threads will get me into trouble one day, I suppose.

Re: Rayman himself
I've been waiting for this to be confirmed and now here we are: Issue 90 of the UK magazine Retro Gamer will have a 4 page article about Rayman.
Skip to about 7 mins in
I haven't bought a Retro Gamer since 2007 so this I will definitely buy and scan for ya.

Re: Rayman himself
That’s great news. An exclusive Michel Ancel interview is sure to yield some interesting nuggets of information, either about past games or future ones.
Re: Rayman himself
*Would like to have a copy of that magazine issue*
You'll scan it Stace? We'll be waiting then.
