Should they release the 2D version of R2?

Post by Paradigm »

They've now created what is essentially a 2D sequel to the first Rayman game, so should Ubisoft complete the original (2D) version of Rayman 2 and release it? I'd happily buy it, irrespective of how good Origins might be.

I sincerely hope it's considered at some point, because to this day I still can't get over how good that one beta level at the end of Rayman 2 is.

As a matter of interest, has the beta version of Rayman 2 (in 2D) ever been leaked anywhere?

Imagine how big is the this beta left on me that I am making my own game trying to be that sequel of Rayman 1! It was great, it was imaginative, it had two dimensions, new enemies, that simple and at the same time tricky and hard 2D world! I miss a good Rayman game, UbiSoft should consider it.

Does anyone know the best method to put in contact with Rayman team in Ubisoft? Anyway.. they will not be interested even in considering it.

They'll never sell a game that was not finished, so let's hope the beta version of the full game gets leaked at some point...

Yeah, I've played the 2D level. In fact, I think I've played it more than I have Rayman 2 itself!

Come to think about it, I have never played it. I'd love to play the “full” game though.

It could always get leaked like the beta Jaguar version of the original game, but I'm being quite optimistic here.

Not sure it would make much sense to release it as a full game today, but I would like to see a few more levels, maybe as a bonus for a future game.

I really like how you could change the diretion of the fist in mid air. :)

As said previously, some of it can be played in the PS1 version of Rayman 2. I'm personally more interested in the SNES version of Rayman 1, since that's really early stuff, but maybe that's just me :P

As I can see, that seem a little slow. The hand just stop in air an begin to rotate, takes time if you want it 240 degree.

Personally, I get the feeling that there wasn't that much created beyond the test level at the end of Rayman 2 PSX. They probably had assets made and maybe some design semblance, but I think the decision to make Rayman 2 in 3D probably happened early enough for not much anywhere near a beta version of the game existed. All there is completed is most likely the prototype level and some design work done further.

The engine is just a trumped up Rayman 1 engine, so I'm sure some fan could one together.

It would be pretty silly of Ubisoft to go back to the started 2D Rayman 2 now, even if they were a good company.

I'm pretty sure that people will try to remake it when Ubiart Framework is released, along with original Rayman. :)

Unless the game could be used as a new Rayman spin-off, or to create a story between Rayman 1 and Rayman 2 (but I doubt).

Plum and I independently came up with that idea a year ago. As more and more returning R1 environments, characters, enemies and objects have been announced, the idea of remaking the original game with the UbiArt framework has become more and more plausible. If the tools are actually released (we haven’t heard anything about that in a while), I definitely expect to see many people attempting to recreate R1 levels, with varying degrees of success.

The story is the same as that of the final version of the game: evil robotic pirates from space invade and take over the world. It would be very odd if they attempted to fit this into the same continuity as the actual Rayman 2.

Ancel has said in recent interviews that they will release it.

That's why I said I doubted they would use them as a spin-off or for a continuity.

Random question. Would you think UbiSoft would agree with external party (small company or something) explicitly asking to create 2D Rayman game, for example this?

Maybe. But I don't see why anyone would do something like that. If you really want a "Rayman" game you can just made up some own characters that look like Rayman creatures.
