Wow RayFan, that looks awesome! As really anything you did thus far does.

How do you do it anyway? If it isn't too complicated, maybe I could do it? It would safe you much work, but I'm afraid I can't really do anything beyond 'select file' -> 'extract'... :P

You need a lot of software, here they are:

3D Ripper DX
Photoshop/GIMP + nVidia DDS plugin
3ds Max + 3DR plugin

Basically, you load a game within 3D Ripper DX, and then you go to the place you want assets from. You press whatever button you set the rip to, and then it creates multiple files: one "frame" file, multiple "shader" files, and a whole bunch of textures in DDS format. If you have the DDS plugin for Photoshop/GIMP, you can open the textures and then save them again into a more publicly viewable format. If you have 3ds Max and the 3DR plugin, you can open the "frame" file and import the shaders that were ripped, and boom, you can view the 3D scene you just ripped inside Max (which is what I did in that picture on the other page).

And you can ask me for whatever you want unless I decline, I like getting the credit!

I might just look into that, thank you.

And you better believe you'll get the credits! This is beyond awesome! :P

So how does 3D Ripper DX work? It just launches the game normally, and then I can press F12 to do some stuff, but...?

As soon as you press F12, the game should freeze for a second and then continue. That's it, then the info should all be in your 3D Ripper DX folder in your Documents folder.

Oh. Huh. For me it crashed. Or that may have been due to the Alt Tab, ince I immediately pressed F12 after I Alt Tabbed back into the game. Oh well, I'll have a look at it, thank you!

I'm afraid I still don't get it.

First, I pressed F12 at the very first menu, that gave me textures from the menu. So then, I started a race and pressed F12, thinking it would get me (among others) textures of the characters paticipating. But it didn't.

So how do I get those 2d, sprite-like textures you had?

Well, what I actually did was rip the model from Rayman Arena, add a mesh smoothing modifier to make it look better, then I quickly made my own running animation and rendered 15'ish frames of it. It's not actually the running animation from Rayman Arena, because to be honest, the running animation from Arena does not look very good from the side.

As for having trouble getting textures, I don't know what the problem would be, I suppose you could just keep trying.

I'm afraid that goes a bit over my head. I'll have another look at it, but I'm afraid I'll ask you to do everything. :P

But don't feel pressured! Do whatever you want, take your time, et cetera, et cetera.

Thank you very much Rayfan!

May I ask you if you are able to rip the level preview images that are seen in the main menu? It would be great.

The only thing I have to note about for example the font files is that blur that's in the background. You'd have to very specifically crop out a 3 instead of just boxing it in a selection box and using it. Really good work on the rips though!

I recommend using Thousand Waterfalls as a good map to view everyone sideways. There's a useful part in the middle there where your character jumps. shoots, grabs Lums and runs. Also, it's already on full side-on view, so no need for awkward camera angles!

By the way, doesn't Rayman 2 also use DirectX? That, combined with Rayman M/Arena, would net me some great level textures I think.

Yes, Rayman 2 runs on DirectX 6.

Oh, I see. I don't think many people know/knew about Rayman Rush once the PS1 became obsolete.

Wow, you really ought to listen to the music with speed and pitch set to 50%. Makes for some nice 'evil end-boss thingy' music.

Yes, it’s all a bit boring. Too easy. Hopefully he’ll at least use a proxy server next time, so we can have some fun trying to catch him.
