Remember the 'Wanna kick Rayman?' series from Rayman 3? There's one lesson where the Hoodlum crams a battery up the catterpillars ... behind. Need I say more?

What's GIMP doing wrong like?

I want a single background image while it cycles through a series of overlays, but it either combines everything, or replaces everything (I understand how combine and replace commands work). I just can't figure out how to make it so the background image stays put

What you want to do is Filter > Animation > Optimize (for GIF).

If it doesn't help then either make sure that your overlays are in the exact same spot or copy the background and merge them with each overlay.
