Re: Rayman 1
You're missing out on one of the greatest soundtracks of all time.
Re: Rayman 1
Oh I haven't missed out on that, I've downloaded the whole thing onto my iPhone and I love it! My favorite tunes have to be First Steps, Fear of Heights, Blazing Brass, Peaceful Peaks, and Space Mama's Play to name a few. I probably am going to say that I love every song on Rayman 1's soundtrack.Adsolution wrote:You're missing out on one of the greatest soundtracks of all time.

You're missing one of the greatest soundtracks of all time accompanied by one of the most frustratingly difficult games of all time.
Re: Rayman 1
Haha, the DSi version first introduced me to the real game. Not sure why I never got the PS1 game before.

Re: Rayman 1
Strangely, I never found the game to be incredibly difficult. To me now, having beaten it at least six or seven times, it's an utter breeze. Even on my first time playing the game (on the PC version), it wasn't overly difficult... except for Moskito's Nest. I have vivid memories of getting stuck on that level for quite a while, but I eventually made it through.Slogbait wrote:You're missing one of the greatest soundtracks of all time accompanied by one of the most frustratingly difficult games of all time.
Re: Rayman 1
I only found it horribly difficult the first couple of times I played it because I was so young at the time and couldn't even get to Moskito, much less get past Bongo Hills. Now the only times I find I have a lot of problems are in Allegro Presto where all the tiny, slippery platforms are, and the last section of Eat At Joe's because my copy won't let you hit the saber-tooth sharks. It really stresses me out when I get to those parts. Otherwise, I've played the game enough times that I have no trouble getting through the rest of it. I've only played the PSX, version though.
Re: Rayman 1
Everybody complains about those two levels and by the same reasons. What level designers wanted to make sure in Allegro Presto is that players were dominating the edge grabbing ability while at the same time being cautious with the slippery path (you can usually avoid that with jumps). For the sabertooth shark, just duck and be more or less in the end of the right side of the ball. He won't bite you if he's coming from the right side too.Slogbait wrote:Now the only times I find I have a lot of problems are in Allegro Presto where all the tiny, slippery platforms are, and the last section of Eat At Joe's because my copy won't let you hit the saber-tooth sharks.
I really don't find the game that difficult at all, I already defeated it 10 times in multiple platforms. I've experienced much more frustrating games. I give Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels as an example, but equally managed to beat it.

Re: Rayman 1
That's almost exactly my story! The things that made Moskito's Nest so hard for me were the swinging spiky fruits, which seemed completely impossible to avoid, and the Tentacle-flower, which I found both scary and confusing. I haven't completely beaten the game yet (I'm missing some cages), but I think it is easy enough up to Space Mama's Crater.Adsolution wrote:Strangely, I never found the game to be incredibly difficult. I've died almost exclusively to him that way. That fish man... that fish.Haruka wrote:He won't bite you if he's coming from the right side too.
Surprisingly enough, I don't think Moskito's Nest was that big of a problem for me. Allegro Presto was easy enough too, because I can distinctly remember playing it as a kid - so I know I've been training for a while. My real mood-breakers are that one-toothed fish at Eat at Joe's and the verticle thumb-tack-bouncy-eraser maze in Picture City. For the rest, the game is amazing and challenging enough, but not too challenging to not be worth it. Besides, it's Rayman. You can't go wrong on Rayman.

Re: Rayman 1
Ah, the age ol' discussion about those damn fish in Eat at Joes, I'm pretty sure I've been such a discussion before.
Re: Rayman 1
Well, I know how to get through the levels, I just haven't perfected my timing yet is all. You know when you slightly over/underjump and you either land flat on the platform and slide off or miss the platform entirely? That's usually what happens. And with the sharks, I usually misjudge their distance from me. I practically got up and threw a party when I managed to get through the levels without dying for the first time a few years ago.Haruka wrote:Everybody complains about those two levels and by the same reasons. Rayman is by far not the most difficult game I've ever played, but it's definitely a good challenge that a lot of my friends give up on early because they can't get past Bongo Hills. Heck, I know a guy who's a big fan of the series that never got past Eraser Plains. That's what I tend to base my statements on is other peoples' experiences with the game. While we might find it easy we've also grown accustomed to the game and how it works, while others who are just being introduced to it or played it maybe one time tops will find it just as difficult as some of the more notorious platform hell games.

Re: Rayman 1
Ah, Eat At Joe's was another difficult level on my first playthrough. That level was an adventure.
Re: Rayman 1
Now I really want to play this game.
Re: Rayman 1
The first time I actually got serious about beating the game and beat Allergo Presto this was the worst area. I kept going back to older levels to gain more tings because I lost 20 continues from it. Probably should have looked it up on the web...Adsolution wrote:Ah, Eat At Joe's was another difficult level on my first playthrough. That level was an adventure.

Re: Rayman 1
Hm, I never had a problem with Allegro Presto. Bongo Hills I found to be more challenging in every aspect. Besides, you can turn Allegro Presto into Andante Adagio by taking the level as slowly as you want.

Bongo Hills was a nightmare at first but now is amongst my favourite levels.

Re: Rayman 1
Yup. That first scene where you wonder out onto the rolling hills will always remain my favourite moment in the game:

Re: Rayman 1
Heh, same for me. Great, imaginative transition. It's a shame that part was removed in some of the versions.
Re: Rayman 1
The removal of that screen is the only thing about the PSX version that particularly bothers me. It was such a nice transition.

Re: Rayman 1
The PC version is the only version I think, of the original four, that has that, the rest share this:
'Twas a nice touch though, giving a transitionary feel, alas, I've not played much of the PC version, so I can't speak for other bits and bobs.
