French with Rayman

Post by Eshap »

Thanks to the excellent help and patience of Emshomar, I have finally managed to get my copy of French with Rayman to work! Now, I can show you all the gameplay and other oddities that this title has. :D

French with Rayman is an uncommon/semi-rare educational game which is based on Rayman 1.
The storyline is similar to that of English with Rayman, except it features a new Magician: Pierre. He has sent the Magician a spell, but it's in French and the doofus can't read it. After Mister Dark spies on the Magician and Betilla, he takes the spell and casts one of his own on the two, which will transform them into gnomes in several hours. Rayman must retrieve the spell to prevent Mister Dark's from turning them into gnomes. Yes, that's really the story.
The levels you play in are very similar to that of regular Rayman 1 stages with similarly challenging platforming. Which...is a bit worrying, because this is a kid's game. It would help if you knew how to play Rayman before playing this. You also have the (rather frightening) experience of dying a horrible death, should you get answers incorrect.

In this thread, I will try to keep you all updated with the various levels in the game. Warning: It's going to get a bit repetitive and monotonous. But, hey, it's Rayman!

Ah, thanks Eshap, perhaps the next victor of the Manipulate the Image game should pick that Betilla, it's a pretty good canvas.

My pleasure, guys! :D I'm really glad to be able to play this game as well as show it to the community.
I'm quite fond of that Manipulate the Image idea, personally. XD

Hmm, looks interesting! Though if this game is really as hard as R1 how on Earth would children be able to learn French with it? They would just spend all day falling off platforms to their death. Maybe their educational games would have been more popular if Ubisoft had not made them so hard... and they wouldn't be so rare if they had been sold more.

That's initially what I thought, though... To be honest, I think it's...managable, but there were parts where I was panicking a bit. Maybe I just suck at Rayman 1? :P
The game hardly TEACHES French per se. I think there's more emphasis on helping you memorise French, but they throw you in without really telling you the words in English (you have to press F10 if you want translations).

Betilla's Garden tutorial levels, just for the heck of it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQyWZzHW ... e=youtu.be

Level 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4iFwzk4o ... e=youtu.be
The basic structure of the levels are 2 normal stages and 1 timed (about 300 seconds). Most of them are "choose the right path" kinds of levels, some are "select the right words".

The videos are going to get longer from here, sadly. If you skip to the end, you can hear the Magician say something in French, which I usually can't understand fully.

I thank both you and Emshomar to make this walkthrough come to surface. If you like, I can add your walkthrough to my Rayman Walkthroughs' first post, to earn more audience. ;)

Oh, this is the "weird" Rayman game. I remember playing the finnish version of this while back ago, and I can just always wonder what is wrong with the Photographers save spot and the world map. :P It's also absolutely hilarious to listen how badly the game has been translated from english to finnish. :D

Levels 2 and 3 are uploading now. They're taking much longer because they're...well, longer. The videos are now reaching about 10-12 minutes long, with Level 2 being over 15 minutes long. ._o Some of them move so slowly.

Also, I've fixed up videos from Level 4 and further: I've reduced the amount of blank spaces, so the resolution should look a little bit bigger. I'd film in windowed mode, but Fraps says no. I'll see if I can fix the other 5 videos if anyone asks.

EDIT: Level 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nU8YqF4k3-8
EDIT 2: I have now finished the game. It's pretty short, considering each level lasts about 10 minutes or so. The last level, I must say, is pretty hard for a kids game. :P I can't count the amount of takes I had to do for it!

I think I saw the Finnish version on a store back in the days, called "Rayman Opettaa Englantia". Oh gosh, I just have to know if anyone is able to find that thing. I want to hear the crappy translation.

Nice, keep it up!

I love how the player is brutally killed every time they get a question wrong... they have to start all over again and there's only a limited amount of lives... I think this is not the best approach to teaching young children a foreign language...

Thank you very much! :D

Yeah, it's pretty scary. As a 6-7 year old playing Maths and English with Rayman, getting questions wrong scared me a lot. :P Consequently, I rarely played the game! Can't deny that I loved it, though.
