Re: Rayman Mega Patch

Post by Snagglebee »

I just had this idea:
Since there's still the CD and all games lying unsecured next to the executer, I could do for the CD:
Earsing all files. Files and Folders are still exisisting just have nothing to care. I made the same technic to Eshap's French with Rayman. From the CD was just some Kilobytes left :D and still the game ran normal.
And for the game files I had that idea:
I won't include them in the installation. If the executer detects that those are missing, it tells the user that the game needs an one-time "activation", checks for a valid CD or looks up if GOG's RF is installed and download the neccassary files from an encrypted URL. After the "activation" the games should start without any checks or DRM or whatever you call it.

How about that?

I'm sorry... I really do not understand what you just said. Do you want to erase the R1 CD while running the patcher? That's a horrible idea... you could just copy over the necessary files, why delete them from the disk?
As for leaving game files out of the installer... well it would be more convenient to the users if you included them. Let's say I have two PCs called A and B. I wanna install R1 on PC A but only PC B has an internet connection. I could download the patch on B, put it on a USB stick, move that to A and install.
But if more downloads are needed I wouldn't be able to install it on A!

Sorry, you must know I'm not so good in English, but I do what I can!

haha :oops2: , no no my friend. Earsing a CD-ROM by software is impossible. I meant it different. The patch is dependet on a CD-Image format like ISO or BIN/CUE. In this case I you find all files as .tra . Those files are binary track files of the CD-Image. The problem here is simply: The file RA01.TRA is a modified Rayman Platin Collection / Collector CD as Bin. All other are compressed music files as OGG. The plan was to earse all files in RA01.TRA and decrease filesize from 200MB -> 2MB. That would also prevent hacktivation.

Easy solution: The activation process is just: Download one file. I could create another program which is checking for GoG or valid CD and Download that one file to Desktop which the user can copy it to USB and finally to PC A. Or more easier by giving the Link by PM.

Er... OK... so if I understand this correctly you're saying that your current patcher has a complete Rayman 1 Collector CD in it that is not used at all. Well go ahead and delete it - a size reduction of 99% sounds good!

But that is still more inconvenient than simply downloading the whole thing in one go. Why split it up into a installer download and an after-activation download?

For some reason your patch is only detecting my F: drive. I am trying to mount a CD ISO I ripped, since I can't find the copy itself. Can you change the drive letter that the patch is detecting?

My RMP detects driveletters from D:/ to Z:/.

Are you sure you're using a valid CD? If you have e.g. Rayman Gold you'll be able to lauch Rayman 1 and Rayman Designer but not Rayman 60 Levels and Rayman by his Fans! Rayman Gold includes only Rayman 1 and Designer.

What Rayman CD and in which letter are you inserting to your PC?

EDIT: You're right! There was really a problem with detecting a CD. Download the updated installation here: v1.17

emshomar, I have a question... and you seem to know a lot about R1, so here goes:

Where are Rayman 1 savegames stored?

I just discovered that when you run DOSBox as administrator, it looks in Program Files... but when you run it without administrative privileges, it looks in C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files. This trick, by the way, allows one to keep up to 6 save files, instead of 3! :)

I have the GOG version of the game, so it looks in Program Files\GOG.com\Rayman Forever\Rayman. I wanted to ask... where do savegames go in the normal (not GOG) version of the game? And what about the re-releases such as Rayman Gold, Forever, Collector, etc.? I'm asking this because I need the info for RaySaves.

It depends on where you launch DOSBox. Program Files is a protected folder. With normal user privileges the software can just read and write to a Virtual Folder. As you described. If Rayman is instead in the Documents Folder which isn't protected the saves won't be stored in the Virtual Folder. It doesn't matter if you have DOSBox or GoG. My Patch has a Administrator Mainfest integrated, so save files won't be stored into the Virtual Folder.

Now to re-resales:
They are just compilations of Games. The games that are included don't differs between singles. The biggest Rayman Compilation is Rayman Collector and its German brother Rayman Platin Collection.

EDIT: You could have better contacted me per Private Message

You're right, a PM would probably have been better... :oops2:
But now I'll post it here, else it would get really confusing. :fou2:

From what I've seen I think the game likes to use its own install directory for storing savegames.
I understand that the location depends on where you installed it, but I want to give the user the precise location of the default install directory.

If I downloaded the game from GOG.com, a folder will be created in Program Files called C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG.com\Rayman Forever\Rayman. This is where Rayman 1 is installed, and where savegames will be located (unless the game resorts to a virtual folder).

But if I have an original Rayman 1 CD, where will it install itself? Obviously not in a GOG.com folder. Because the CD version does not come from GOG.com, the place where savegames are stored is different.

And... If I have a compilation, such as Rayman Gold, where will it install? Will it be the same as in the original version, or will it be something like "Program Files\Rayman Gold\Rayman"?

So I need to know the default install directory. I know a user can change it, but most users wouldn't do it and if they had changed it, they probably know where to look anyway.

The precise location is in users Registry. It's located in : "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\GoG.com\GOGPACKRAYMANFOREVER\GOGRAYMAN" or in 64bit: "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\GoG.com\GOGPACKRAYMANFOREVER\GOGRAYMAN"

I know. I bought it myself.

"C:\RAYMAN"

Doesn't matter. A compilation has the same Installer as a single Rayman 1 CD, that means same Install Directory.

Re: Rayman Mega Patch

Hey, that's interesting. In HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\GoG.com\GOGPACKRAYMANFOREVER\GOGRAYMAN1 there is a key called SAVEGAMEFOLDER... right below the PATH that's probably the install directory.

PATH: C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG.com\Rayman Forever\Rayman\
SAVEGAMEFOLDER: C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG.com\Rayman Forever\Rayman\

So... the savegame location is not bound to the install directory! I think it's possible to set the savegame folder to whatever you want. However, I have never seen an option in any interface (neither ingame nor in a setup) to change it. But if the user changes that registry key... they may be able to change it.

Maybe you could let the user choose what savegame folder they want in your patch/installer/executer?

Oh... you're right.

I thought it was just a matter of asking the user to provide a path, then setting the SAVEGAMEFOLDER value to that path.

But I just tested it (made a folder on my desktop, then pointed SAVEGAMEFOLDER to it) and it didn't work :(

Now I have another problem. :P For some reason, DOSBox keeps exiting out whenever I try to launch the game. Also, I don't see the intro anymore. I am mounting an ISO of an NTSC Rayman CD that was a rerelease by SoftKey.

If it doesn't launch then it means that some files are missing. Uninstall and delete the complete folder. Then install again v1.17

I still have the problem. It occurs both when I launch the GOG.com version and CD with your patch. I have no idea what the hell is happening, since the patch seems to work fine for everyone else.
