OLED Technology

Post by Reese Riverson »

Yep, it's coming around, and quickly. Already in Playstation Vitas, but what are your thoughts?

Especially when you see companies such as Samsung rolling out curved OLED TV sets?

My thoughts? I can't wait, because it's about time LCD is gotten rid of with it's untrue black levels, and lack of color quality compared to CRTs that remain superior in that aspect. (Such as my Sony FW900 computer CRT that does 1920 x 1200 at 95Hz all day, and even 2560 x 1600 at 75Hz when I want all day too, not even the latest and greatest IPS monitor could match the color quality, but it can come quite close.)

OLED corrects many of the problems LCD has, such as true blacks, provided a company doesn't add back lighting to them. Anyway, still is a new technology that I'll wait to see how it turns out, and hopefully for the future 4K resolution sets, they'll add a DisplayPort so we can have 60Hz at such resolutions, due to HDMI being limited to 30Hz.

As an additional note, we shall see how they fair in longevity with issues that iOLED should correct.

HDMI isn't limited to 30 hz, where'd you get the idea that it is?

I'll probably end up getting an OLED monitor when they become slightly cheaper. I've unfortunately never been fruitfully acquainted with LED screens, so the jump up from LCD will be pretty massive once I have the money.

Same thing here. Although I love the LED/OLED due to the drastic improvement in the colour contrast when watching audiovisual content, I still think that it is better to wait that it becomes a generalized technology, appearing a lot of offer of brands and models of TVs and being more accessible to every wallet too, I so prefer to wait. For now I'm fine with my LCD.

HDMI is indeed limited to 30hz on a 4k resolution. :P

4K is an incoming trend, I think when it becomes more popular and viable, a 60Hz capable cable may be introduced, perhaps even an updated HDMI interface.

Ah, well that's a 4K resolution. :P Realistcally that isn't a problem as there are almost no TV programmes, shows or films that run above 30 FPS themselves. Games are the only things in common use that do, and none of the new-generation consoles run at 4K. In fact, the only time you'd actually end up running a game at that resolution is if you own multiple of some of the most expensive GPUs on the market. 4K monitors are hellishly expensive, and most cheap GPUs only have one DVI/HDMI output, disallowing you to plug in enough monitors to reach that resolution, even if you have two or three cards of that kind.

In light of all that, HDMI's limitation really doesn't matter right now. I'll be expecting some kind of an 'HDMI2" to be released when it becomes more of a concern.

Well, maybe so, but Asus will be having a 4k monitor, 31.5" display, that will feature both HDMI and Display port.

(Note, page is in Chinese but the specs are in English)
