PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale

Post by SegaNintendoUbisoft »

I decided to make a thread about what I find to be one of the most underrated fighting games, PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale.
Image
Any fans of All-Stars on this forum, feel free to post your thoughts on the game, talk about your mains, ideas for a sequel, and just anything about All-Stars.
If you haven't played the game, try it out, you can get it for pretty cheap.

Hm, the image in your post was too large, I've replaced it with a smaller version.

As for the game itself, I was interested when it was announced, but didn't really care for it by the time of release. It's probably a decent game, but not one that I feel I'm missing out on without.

Well, it obviously is a Smash Bros ripoff. However, I think they put way too much effort into making it that, and too little effort into coming up with creative ways to make it an original game. They could have done far more with it if they'd not gone down the route that they did.

It's not a bad game, simply okay, but it in no aspects does it surpass Smash Bros.

I'm more surprised you actually played it Ad. But yes I couldn't agree any more, it's a meh-ish game (I have the vita version).

Can't wait for Microsoft all stars battle Royale!

It's actually one of the few games I have for my PS3. Some others include MGS 4, The Last of Us, and while we have a few more, I can't remember them off the top of my head.

Wouldn't that be something.

I actually won it for free it in a claw-grab in Florida's Old Town back in 2007. Even though I have little interest in the console itself, what a score!

I disagree, the game is similar to Smash Bros in structure, but it terms of combat, it's way different. The super system in the game plays way differently than knocking off the edge. There's no denying that Smash Bros is the better game, but something about All-Stars sticks with me. The game's fanbase, while small compared to other fighting game communities, is very passionate, and are powerful when they work together. Heck, when Santa Monica Studios said the game was getting no more support, the fanbase was strong enough to convince them otherwise. Now, a brand new balancing patch is being made(I'll go into that story in more detail later). If you don't like the game, or just think it's okay, that's fine, but for me, I love it. I want to see grow into a full blown franchise.

It was my favorite console of last gen, had so many good games, still some games I need to play on it, which is why I'm getting into the Yakuza series soon.

My mains were Nariko and Jak, I used to play online quite a lot. I personally hope that if they do make a sequel they go for a more stylized art style, to make the varied combination of cartoony and realistic characters blend better. Something along the lines of MVC or even Blazblue would be cool, however I'm sure many would disagree with me. I think they should drop the super system and just go for a more traditional fighting style, as it got really annoying and unbalanced at times. They already had given characters some great and often elaborate combos and the online aspect was great as well as the community. I'd also want a much better third party roster as well as using multiple characters from the same PlayStation IPs; the Cooper gang and Qwark come to mind. I'd also like to see Daxter and Clank as their own separate playable characters, Daxter using all his exterminator gadgets and Clank as his Secret agent Clank persona. Oh and the boss fight with Polygon man was lame, the story mode was actually really repetitive too but I really enjoyed the rivalries and storylines despite them lacking in some areas.

I will try to tell what I think about this game without sounding harsh.
First of all, I was super hyped for this game. I defended it when it was called Rip-off, and I thought it will be best game of 2012. However when I got the game, all it was was a huge disappointment with not so fun gameplay and lamest character roster ever. Most of PlayStation Legends were missing.

Yeah I was really hyped for the game too. I'd give the 1st part roster 8/10 (loved how they added Kat through DLC) but the third party side like 2/10. It really needed Crash, Spyro, Cloud Strife among others. New Dante, big daddy, Issac Clark and Raiden were all horrid choices. The only one that I liked and thought was worthy was Heihachi.

In Superbot's defense, they were a brand new company. Big name companies such as Activision and Square Enix giving their characters to a rookie company is almost unheard of. They were lucky to get the third party characters they already have. Crash and Spyro's absence in the game was sad, but hey! That's what sequels are for.

It's not a rip-off of Smash at all, because the meta game is completely different, and you're pretty much doing the exact opposite of what you do in Smash (i.e, trying to draw opponents in at all times for combos, unless you're a ranged or strategy based character). One thing I think All-Stars actually does better than Smash is varying the characters - regardless of whether or not you like the roster, in terms of their movesets, it trumps Smash in terms of variation between them. It also trumps Smash's training tools. I also like how All-Stars gives you the option to switch off stage hazards.

I like Smash better because it has more content and is more refined due to how long it has been around (All-Stars could do with a few tweaks to how it feels, and iron out some bugs - it has been a while since I played it though), and there is of course the matter of Smash feeling much more "all-star" in it's cast and stuff like that (basically, Smash is much better for the whole "celebration of a company" aspect), but with a sequel or two and more refinement and content, it could easily rival Smash.

Literally the only two similarities between Smash and All-Stars are that it crosses over franchises, and that they are 4-player "platform" fighters. They are part of the same sub-genre, but are still extremely different.

-----------

So yeah, I actually really like All-Stars too. It has flaws, but it's a bloody engaging fighting game when you're up against good players.

I admittedly stopped playing after I reached Rank 999 with Sackboy (my main man! I can pull off crazy stuff with him, including a combo that can rack up to 170 AP, if IIRC :P). But if anyone wants to have a few friendly games with me, or help them out in 2v2, I'd be willing to play again.

I've actually been asked to bring in games to play as part of a class tomorrow in college, and this is one I'm bringing in (I would bring SSBB too, but that requires bringing in GameCube controllers and what not, which are bulky and difficult to fit in my bag - plus, when one of our tutors asked us what systems we had at the beginning of the year, the whole class scoffed at the idea of having a Wii or Wii U when the tutor mentioned those consoles).
