Because the Smash Bros topic is hard to keep people interested in, and because this project deserves recognition, I'm making a separate topic.
Project M is a LEGAL mod for Super Smash Bros Brawl, that aims to make the game faster and more competitive like Melee was, while also adding it's own unique features and twists. It includes a general tweaking of the game's mechanics to make it faster (and also making techniques such as wavedashing possible once again). It also includes move set changes and general tweaks for all characters (for example, Samus can change between a flamethrower and an ice weapon, Kirby can now use his fire dash from Melee, and Sonic's move set has various new moves that are reminiscent of his move set in Sonic Battle).
As well as this, Zelda, Sheik, Charizard, Squirtle, and Ivysaur have all been separated into their own character slots and have their own down specials now. There are also various new stages for this mod that have not been in Smash Bros before (fun fact - Sky Loft has been in Project M since before the reveal of Super Smash Bros 4!).
New to Version 3.0 - Kirby, Yoshi, Olimar, Ice Climbers, and Samus have finally been added to the roster. Mewtwo and Roy have also been added to the roster, making a desired return from Melee. The first batch of alternate costumes have also been added to some of the characters (such as Ocarina of Time Link for Link).
Probably the biggest new feature of this release though, is the addition of "Turbo Mode". This can be used as a power-up item, or you can use Special Brawl to play matches entirely in this mode. While in Turbo Mode, input for another move can be done the MOMENT you connect an attack, meaning combo potential for all characters is only limited by your own imagination and dexterity.
Further details (including detailed information on what each character is like in this mod) and download details are on the official site for the mod. Please note that, currently, only NTSC users can currently use Version 3.0 legally. NTSC-J users can use Version 2.6b legally (that version does not have all current features, though). You can also run the mod perfectly fine if you play using the Wii U's "Wii Mode". Right now, there is currently no way for PAL users to use this mod legally, but there is an option provided for anyone who has a hacked Wii (it's recommended that you use the legal method if you can, especially if you want to try playing online).
The mod does support online play, however, a second "Wi-Fi Safe" package must be installed when you want to play online (it disables certain features that currently can't work online, as well as preventing you from connecting to players of the official Super Smash Bros Brawl).

Hm, heard of it before, I'm not really the kind of player who'd make optimal use of this mod, I admit, I'm purely casual with Smash Bros.

Re: Project M 3.0 is out!
It's still possible to play casually just fine with this mod. If you can access it (though if I'm not mistaken, you live in the PAL region so you might be out of luck :\), and just want something to tide you over until Smash 4 comes out. I'd recommend giving it a shot. The purpose of the mod is to expand the options available to more dedicated players, as well as to possibly boost the tournament scene forward. It doesn't really take away any of the options for casual players (such as Special Brawl). It should also be noted that this mod is not meant to emulate Melee. The developers recognise that Melee had it's own flaws, so they simply take some of the best aspects of both Melee and Brawl.
Me personally, I'm in the middle - I WANT to play competitively in Smash, but living in Ireland isn't the nicest place to live for a gamer who's like myself, therefore I never could enter tournaments. So I won't be able to really get competitive until Smash 4 arrives with it's online mode and better mechanics than Brawl. I still practice advanced techniques though, even in Brawl, as it makes it easier to beat higher difficulty modes and I can surprise my friends when I'm playing for fun.
I sort of just want this as something new to tide me over until Smash 4 comes out (and judging by the caption of today's daily Smash screenshot, Smash 4 will have it's own tricks up it's sleeve for competitive play too). I won't have anyone to play super competitively with, but my friends will still enjoy it. Turbo Mode looks like it would be a blast to play in 4-player.

Thanks for crushing all my hopes and dreams when you said you're out of luck in PAL regions.

He said "might," there's some uncertainty, some Googling around may shed some information to the contrary or in agreement.
Hm, mine is a hacked Wii anyways, so there might be some way to work around such a potential barricade.

This is why I said "might be out of luck".Hm, mine is a hacked Wii anyways, so there might be some way to work around such a potential barricade.
PAL users who do not have a hardmodded Wii CANNOT use this mod right now. Those who have a hacked Wii (there is support for more than one OS, such as Gecko and Riivolution) can use this. It requires an extra step or two, and the modders do not condone piracy (however, if you have bought a legal copy of Brawl at some point, then you are justified in using the hack method anyway). But it works just fine.
There is a walkthrough for both the Full Set and the Wi-Fi Safe versions of the mod on the official site I linked to, and it has a walkthrough for the legal method and the illegal method.
