Your game of the generation

Since we are now officially into the next generation with all the new consoles released, what was your favourite game of the prior generation and why?

I don't think I can make a decision as particular as that. But if I had to choose the most awe-inspiring game, and the one that really just blew away my expectations, I'd say Journey on PS3. Such a beautiful game...no, experience (which is to say it's more than just a game to me) in every sense of the word.

Hm, for this generation? Hm, Crack in Time was the first game of this generation I played from start to finish, and it was marvellous, so I'll put that forward for now.

Favorite of the seventh generation? Eh, either A Crack in Time or Rayman Origins, I haven't played many seventh generation games yet but I will eventually.

Hm, yet Half Life 2 is last gen, having released in 03/04, funny how they've been refining and upgrading the same engine for a decade.

Did you just put Skyward Sword over Twilight Princess - yes, Twilight Princess was on Gamecube, but Wii too therefore I count it as seventh generation too. Hmm, then again it wasn't bad - albeit everyone seems to hate it, it just wasn't as good as Twilight Princess in my opinion.

Walking Dead, the Uncharted series, Heavy Rain, and Portal 2 are some of my top choices for this generation. Haven't played The Last of Us, but it sounds like an amazing game.

Hm, I'd probably have to give the prestigious award to Assassin's Creed II. Right around the 08-09 period, pioneered by Grand Theft Auto IV, you suddenly started to see all these games popping up with incredibly complex protagonists and levels of storytelling that had never been even approached in the video gaming realm before. I believe Assassin's Creed II to be the defining title of this generation because not only did it master the elements just previously mentioned, it masters all areas of game design including gameplay, art and storytelling, and not one of the aforementioned aspects of the game could have been accomplished during the previous generation.

As much as games like Portal 2 and Origins (the latter I suppose for some) are some of the most memorable of the generation, both of them, especially the latter exhibit no traits that wouldn't have been accomplishable on one, even two generations beforehand. They just happened to be developed/released in 2011, and as such, they were obviously put on the consoles of that generation. They are and will always remain very noteworthy games, but by no means define any generation in particular.

BioShock Infinite.

This is another one I had high up on my list, for most of the same reasons as Assassin's Creed II.
