Official Silent Hill Topic

Post by technology4617 »

Since I haven't seen this here, this is the official topic for the Silent Hill game survival horror game series. That's it--I don't really have anything else to say as of yet.

Hm, I looked about and there is indeed no thread for this, curious, I was under the impression there was a thread which had something to do with this series.

I know, but I was certain there was a thread on it regarding an LP or something to that effect.

To be clear, I searched for the keyword "Silent Hill" in Advanced Search for topics, and found no topics of this sort.

The first two games are my favorite survival horror titles of all time, the first one having a special place in my heart as it was the first "true" survival horror title I played. The second one has a much better narrative, though.

Also, never play the PC ports of the games (or, worse, the HD Collection). They are of poor quality (esp. Silent Hill 2) and have issues working on modern systems, with the exception of the third game. Play the original PS2 versions, even if on an emulator. ;)

The first game is a PlayStation exclusive, and works fine on any of the PlayStation consoles (although on PS3, you will need to turn down the game volume to avoid audio issues) and the XEBRA emulator.

As did I, I was merely airing my curiosity that the situation was to the contrary of what I had believed.
Either ways, not really one for horror in general, and in addition Survival Horror.

I've always preferred traditional aciton-adventure over survival horror. Anyways, shouldn't there be a sub-forum for all these topics, there's too many of them and I keep losing count of them. I never even knew there was a Silent Hill topic.

I don't know. I just created this topic today, though. ;)

I enjoy horror games if they are done well (such as the original SH trilogy), with the same good narrative and enjoyability that other games do. Same with horror movies. Games like Slender don't really do anything for me.

Same here, but I'll enjoy any game as long as it's well done. It's just that I - in general - prefer action-adventure. Survival horror is definitely great when well-done though. I'm not a fan of the more recent survival horror takes though, which many often brand survival-action or horror-action because they're closer to shooting or fighting games due to all the action while older ones involved avoiding mostly.

You might like some of the indie horror games then, such as Amnesia and Outlast. I haven't played Amnesia yet, so I can't comment on that, but Outlast provided good scares, a good atmosphere, and good gameplay. However the narrative didn't make a lot of sense, consisting of stories of a deity called the Walrider that changed every two minutes, and ended up just being a mishmash of retarded cliches. I would give the game perhaps a 7.5/10, as a strong narrative is very important to me in games like these, and Outlast did not deliver on that front. I haven't played Slender: The Arrival, so I also can't comment on that, but the original game was massively overrated in my opinion.

I agree that the classic survival horror games were the best, though. ;)

The third one did not leave a lasting impression upon me, however I really liked the first two. The atmosphere is quite unique and it felt really immersive.

Maybe I should give the rest of the series a try, though I expect to be disappointed by at least a few of them, given how many there are. :P
