Why 5 years waiting? Because they are talking bullshit and just trying to get some money. The fact that in 2011 there was no Wii U yet only proves that.
Philips is still butthurt that CDi failed and that their partnership with Nintendo is over.

Actually, the Wii U mention is not the odd part. The Wii U was known to support Wii Remotes in 2011. So the technology used to make Wii Remotes possible on Wii is present in the Wii U, and we all knew that in 2011. So it makes sense that they would mention the Wii U.

The odd part is that it apparently took them 5 years to figure out what kind of technology makes Wii Remotes work, even though Nintendo outright explained it before the Wii launched. If Nintendo was in the wrong, they would never have done that, and this patent would have been made before the Wii launched considering Nintendo explained how it worked before the Wii launched.

Also, I doubt this has anything to do with Philips being butthurt about the CDi, companies don't work like that. This has to do with "idea patenting" being a way for less successful, or even just greedy companies, to make a profit off of the successes of other companies. Nintendo was already the target of this when some Japanese company sued them over the technology that makes the 3DS work it's glasses-free 3D magic, as that company patented a similar way of making it work. That company somehow won in the end, and now they take a small percentage of the money made from 3DS sales from now on.

Nintendo is just loaded with cash and everyone wants a piece of it.

In more favourable news, the Mario Kart 8 reviews have already surfaced. Very positive reviews all around. From the sounds of it though, they kind of dropped the ball on a few more minor details. The reception for Battle Mode is pretty mixed, and you can't use the GamePad as an extra screen in two-player. Even offline, you still have to share the TV with Player 2. Mario Kart TV only lets you create 30 second videos, and you cannot edit the replays directly, you simply set some basic criteria (such as what characters to focus on and what actions to focus on), and the game does it all for you. While the results look really nice, it would have been nice to have the option to manually edit replays.

Also, some online features are not up to snuff. Voice chat only works with friends, which I'm OK with, but it's only available in the match lobby, not during the actual races. And apparently you cannot invite friends to your lobby, they have to manually join you. So if you want to "invite" friends, you have to literally get in contact with them through external means and tell them to join you.

Also, you can't save customised karts or use pre-sets, you have to choose individual kart parts every time you choose a kart, and the interface for it isn't great either.

I hope they patch in these features later on, at least.

Those are great news! It could perfectly mean a future recording of the exclusive Gamecube minigames of Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc!

Yeah :D
Too bad when someone records it gets a bit slowed down. I am still not sure if it is emulation that needs to be improved or does it matter because of PC power. Either way, this is very new and some time is needed.

Looks like the GameCube controller isn't dead yet.

Hm, given its exceedingly good reputation, it wouldn't surprise me to see a continuation of the controller in some manner. Here's hoping this successor does well.

I'm probably not going to bother with it personally, since it needs to be connected as an extension to the Wii Remote.

A proper 3D Kirby? Colour me intrigued.

I'm all for it also, though I'm probably more curious about how it'd be executed.

It would be nice to see how "colorful" Kirby's world would look like in 3d
