As far as I know, Wii U is not graphically more powerful than PS3 (dunno about 360) but Wii U has better RAM.

It's completely plausible that they may have been discovering some limitations of the Wii U and had to tone things down.

At the same time though, screenshots are never going to do it justice. I know that Mario Kart 8 looks so much better in person than with screenshots.
Screenshots never do games justice, I agree, but it seems like a really major jump. One is filled to the brim with detail, and the other just looks more simple. If I'm not mistaken, the Wii U is more powerful than the PS3 and 360, and those can run CE3 perfectly fine. I'm sure the game will look fine overall, but going from the first image to the second feels like a tease.
Now that I think about it, the old screenshot you posted is actually of a hub world, while the other is of a Speed Stage.

Considering how the Speed Stages will stretch on for miles, it may be that they are intentionally less detailed in the background.

Oddly enough, the actual footage does look fine to me, in that mine level. So maybe it is just this Speed Stage. In any case, I'm sure they will up the presentation (right now, Sonic Lost World looks better than this game in the graphics department).

The running sections in the first trailer had the same amount of detail as the hub. The mine levels look fine, in some ways I think it looks a little better than before, it's just the outside areas that are disappointing me. Though graphics are honestly the least of my worries, I'm sure it will be a fine game, but I'm not really impressed with what I see.

The footage of the Speed Stages before was really fast and had motion blur, so it's hard to really say if it had a lot of detail then.

Looking at this, the speed section is less detailed than the hub, but more than the current build. It's a minor thing, but I kind of got excited to see a Sonic game in the CryEngine, it's just a little disappointing to see it change.

Well the characters definitely look better in the newer screenshots, and all of the other levels are coming along well, so...yeah, I'm gonna attribute this to that level going through experimental changes. Maybe the latter screenshot is a less detailed island or something, or maybe the draw distance is still being worked on and the newer screenshot is lacking details because of that.

Sorry for the double post, but footage for Sonic Boom without any voiceovers has arrived.

Nothing changing for me, I still feel rather meh about the game, maybe even a bit worse.
Also, new character at 3:34.
EDIT: Wow, people are just tearing this game a new one.

I was excited until I heard live-action/CG hybrid, that's usually a recipe of disaster. Still giving it shot, but it has me worried.

I'm not put off by "CG-Live action hybrid".

Smurfs and Chipmunks were not bad because of that. They were bad because they weren't well written and got boring.

I'm pretty sure Sonic's movie won't be about him and his friends trying to become pop sensations, at least.

A live-action movie is still very risky, I hope for the movie to be good, even with live-action. I hope it stays true to it's roots, and overall I want it to be fun. Still, live-action and Sonic don't mix, at all.

In other news, little thing I noticed in GameXplain's Smash Run footage for Smash 3DS:

Huh, go figure. Ninty and Sega's throwing down the gauntlet is nothing new, but these references are pretty insane.

So for one reason or another, SEGA have reversed their decision regarding letting the Sonic Boom series touch Japan's consumers, according to Famitsu - the two games will be releasing in Japan this Winter, and the series is renamed "Sonic Toon" in Japan. No word on the TV series or toys going over yet, but considering the name of the series in Japan, I wouldn't be surprised if at least the TV show makes it over. It'll certainly be interesting to see how Japan receives this Western take on Sonic.

. Releasing a westernized take on a Japanese franchise that wasn't big there to begin with seems rather odd (watch this end being bigger in Japan then the main series ever was, oh sweet irony). Still, it's great for the Sonic fans in Japan.
