Just reread it, while your theory still holds water, Umber doesn't die in the PS1 version:

Does he not? Near the end of the cutscene, he begins to sink completely into the lava like he does in the other versions. But then, I always wonder whether he actually dies in that lava or not. It would be a very dramatic gesture.

I would assume he doesn't actually die, just sink in the lava. I mean he is the guardian of the place surely he won't die of lava.

Hm, and that brings up another curiosity I have. And that's with backtracking and continuity, Rayman 2 has it so that all bosses can't be refought, except for Umber. It seems to me that the intention is that when Rayman returns to a previous level, he's actually doing so in present time, unlike in Rayman 3, where he's clearly reverting back to a past time.

With that in mind, could it be canonical that Umber doesn't actually drown? And is merely a sentient trap to ward off overtly confident thieves who think they've beaten the Sanctuary? Being there as a final test of humility and awareness, and then resetting himself to test another?

It would make Razorbeard a non-exclusive member of the lava bath club.

I really don't believe he really kills himself, but like Master said, I would take it more like a intentional action to trap the thieves. Alas, the PS1 version shows that Umber's reason wasn't affected by the explosion of the Heart of the World contrary to Foutch who got mad and couldn't have conscience that Rayman wasn't a thief.

Whether or not he dies would depend on Umber's stoney chemical compound. I wonder what he's made of!

He looks to be wood. But that would be incredibly thoughtless.

Maybe he's made of that Aztec temple type of rock?

I would guess he's made of umber.
That way both the French and English names have meaning!

But that stuff's probably not strong enough to make a stone Colossus. It must be mixed with something else!

Did anyone ever think that Rayman 2 is so dark because The Heart actually exploded? Rayman's world in 2 is in the worst state it has ever been in any of the other games. I'd like to see The Heart exploded again in a future game, having that dark feeling again would be amazing.

Naturally! The chaos the world was thrown in when the Heart of the World exploded is horrifying - Piranhas have proliferated, Zombie Chickens were born, all magic folk are slowly losing their power. The Glade's inhabitants have been reduced to slaves and their robot overlords have created bastions of their own on the surface.

I wonder how long everyone thinks Rayman's been in that cell. At first glance, you'd only think a couple of months, maybe. But look at it this way: the Pirates have been able to infiltrate every corner of the Glade, building machines, contraptions, placing Cages, erecting forts and laying down patrols. I think we're not talking months here. Rayman's been locked in there for years, I pose.

I can definitely see him being in there for a few years maybe, seeing how grim he is. Surely The Glade wouldn't get so extremely vile in just a few weeks. Rayman has lost all hope at that point and that's very depressing for a hero.

Y'know, this makes me wonder, what were Globox and the rest doing in the meantime when Rayman was captured by the Pirates? It was never stated in the official Manual that Globox got captured by the Pirates. If Rayman truly was locked away for such a long time, it's no wonder he gave up hope.

http://sebeq13.deviantart.com/gallery/42119178/Rayman-2 This guy right here is working on a pretty interesting take on 2's story, it's a sequel to his original 1 story called ''Rayman Origins'', which was different from the original but yet similair. His comics are very gruesome and dark however. Good thing I so happen to love that.

There's another piece that appears in some Manuals detailing how Rayman got captured. If memory serves, Rayman told Globox to find Ly, after Ly told Rayman about the explosion of the Heart.

Recently bought Rayman 3D and I'm really digging it. I've sorta lighten up on the game and see why it's a favorite among here. Emphasis on sorta.

It was an ok port, but it is a shame there are some glitches and problems that could perfectly be avoided if things were not rushed.

I should of specified that I was talking about Rayman 2 in general. The port is good, the music glitches don't bother me as much.

Yep, but still I find the flipped/mirrored textures unforgiving.

That happens? That'll completely break the magic of the game! :|
