Re: Your Computers
Hmm, Secure Boot's a preinstalled feature on Win8 computers, isn't it? I recall it being problematic to people who wanted to install Linux on their machines, so I can imagine why you'd be less than appeased by such a feature.

Re: Your Computers
Yes, any computer with a Win8 logo has Secure Boot on by default. The entire system is one big fat middle finger to the idea of "The customer is always right", or any equivalent notion.
EDIT: Sorry if my last post looked a bit rude. I only bolded that sentence because "GNU is Not Unix" is actually what the recursive acronym "GNU" stands for. Also I was a bit upset when I saw the claim that Mac OS X runs the Linux kernel, as techies like me tend to be.

Re: Your Computers
It's fine, I'm not knowledgeable at all with the more involved techie stuff, I only go by what I've heard or read in the past.
Re: Your Computers
@PluMGMK Sorry about that
I keep confusing Unix and Linux.

Re: Your Computers
It's fine, I shouldn't have over-reacted.
There's really no Unix at all anymore, just Unix-like systems, like GNU/Linux, FreeBSD, Darwin, etc. (I actually thought FreeBSD was true Unix, until Lovy recently pointed out to me that all the original AT&T code was removed from the codebase so it could be freely distributed.)

My laptop 's speakers are dead. - -'
Re: Your Computers
Well, I guess I can proudly show my brand new laptop here!
But first,
So yeah it's a Clevo P150EM: i7 3720, Radeon HD 7970M, 250Go SSD, 8GB of RAM, Full HD. I bought it used with Razer Electra headphones and a Roccat mouse for 700€.
It had Windows 8.1, and made a dualboot with a 64 bits Slackware 14.1. Best linux distro IMHO.
I just finished configuring the Slackware, I just installed what would be useful to me: last catalyst drivers (and get ride of this dumb huge generic kernel), steam, netbeans, mplayer, seamonkey, terminator.
And as WindowManager I chose the great awesomeWM, it's a tiling WM, you never waste an once of space on your desktop.
Here are some screenshots of that beast (click to enlarge):
Without windows opened: With some windows (yes I forgot to set syntaxic coloration for vim):

Re: Your Computers
You might have a corrupt stick of RAM, or one of the slots might be corrupted. Try removing all but one stick and testing it in each slot to see if one is causing the problem.
