What the hell is this crap? < has no idea how, but some company seems to have claimed <'s Skype name and has been spamming < with advertising bots. It's a bit rude, but here's my conversation with it before it got blocked:

< just Googled <'s own name and found a website < made when < was like 8. Here's an extract:

"an ice cream had a cherry on top and it sank down, meanwhile an iceicle fell and melted and a boy dyed and it was all reported in the news
what was going on? thats my riddle"

"the answer: it was an earthquake."

It seems < has always been a fan of riddles

< can't wait to be able to create SPORE Adventures again. < has missed it.

Or maybe < should just start creating Unreal adventures... ;D

< is booting up <'s Unreal Engine to create some Unreal adventures.

Ambi, the issue is with the use of 'opinion' :P
< knows that English is created by its speakers, not its ass-backwards dictionary definitions, but hey ho we all need some law and order amirite Ad me wee ducklin'

Well < has no idea. < would have thought the "In my opinion" would render anything that follows as <'s opinion, so if < said "In <'s opinion, KFC is crap" it would be equivalent to "< thinks KFC is crap". If this is not the case, then what could the word opinion be used for? It seems useless otherwise.

Ad made a post in Off Topic explaining his position on the term 'opinion' and its common misuse, which < believes you indeed responded to. < links you here.

<'s own position is that your use of opinion is perfectly valid and, in fact, more reflective of the English language as is than Ad's definition. That said, it is useful to have the some kind of 'opinion/personal preference' distinction, so HEY WHATEVS

< did read the post, but totally forgot what it said :P
< will go read that now...

A'ight, < just re-read it, and < still doesn't quite agree... < isn't sure where Ad got that definition, but to <'s understanding it's simply someone's belief about something, be it disprovable or not.
For example: "In <'s opinion, this thing is bad"

This would be < expressing what < believes about something, and there's no proof against it, because it's literally just what < thinks about the item in question, i.e. (or what < thought was "i.e.") "<'s opinion".

This is the dictionary definition on TFD:
1. A belief or conclusion held with confidence but not substantiated by positive knowledge or proof: "The world is not run by thought, nor by imagination, but by opinion" (Elizabeth Drew).
2. A judgment based on special knowledge and given by an expert: a medical opinion.
3. A judgment or estimation of the merit of a person or thing: has a low opinion of braggarts.
4. The prevailing view: public opinion.
5. Law A formal statement by a court or other adjudicative body of the legal reasons and principles for the conclusions of the court.

It doesn't say an opinion has to have no opposing evidence, as Ad said:
Adsolution wrote: in order for an opinion to be valid, there must be no evidence whatsoever coming from the other direction to directly/factually contradict it.
Here is a direct response from users of a popular English linguist forum:
http://english.stackexchange.com/questi ... rd-opinion

There will surely be more responses to come, but there is one already.

< doesn't want this to become another argument, so < will try to compact as much information in each post as possible until the matter is resolved, though < is almost 100% sure <'s usage of the word "opinion" is correct, and Ad's is incorrect.

< Graduated yesterday.
Last night < had a dream in which < read a fanfiction about the Musician dying from illness. Odd, since any fanfiction like that < would probably be writing, not reading. In fact, < did start writing a fanfiction in which the Musician dies from an illness but < hasn't finished it.

did ^ start writing the fanfic before having the dream?
In other words, did ^ possibly have the dream because of the fanfic, or was the fanfic inspired by the dream?

< was going to nab some post-party smarties from downstairs but <'s mother won't let <.
To be fair it wasn't even <'s party and < wasn't even there (because < doesn't really like parties), it was <'s mothers 50th.

Still, doze smarties doe...

Only 75070 tings before < reaches Jano rank!
<'s going to have to wait a while... A long while...

< Started the fanfic ages ago, and hasn't even looked at or thought about it in ages. In fact, < hasn't really been thinking about Rayman much lately, except for this GIF < posted to Tumblr yesterday with no context.

And now, because of that dream < might be slipping back into <'s Rayman phase. Weird.

< thinks that this reply to ^'s question about 'my opinion' vs 'I think' states it best:
"In my opinion" is better used when expressing preference for subjective things. "In my opinion, Michelangelo is a better artist than Da Vinci," is an example of a correct use. For an example of a strange use: "In my opinion, spinach has more vitamin C per serving than oranges." Since you can measure the vitamin C in these foods, you can't really have an opinion about them.
You can't have an opinion about factual things; that makes no sense. You can have an opinion on subjective things, since they're unmeasurable.

"I like games that are realistic." is an opinion based on personal preference.
"Games that are realistic are crap." is an opinion based on personal preference.
"Games that have bugs in them are crap." is pretty much fact because we expect games to function properly for them to be enjoyable or even better, playable.
The very first thing you said, Ambs, is what spun off this conversation in the first place:
Just games like Call of Duty where everyone looks the same and is wearing camo, and the environment is all dusty and "realistic" which just takes away from the fun and makes it harder to play.
The fact that you say 'which just takes away from the fun and makes it harder to play' seems to mean that you think that it's factually true that 'realistic' games are less fun because they're harder. This is untrue. And even if it were, some people enjoy things more when they get harder.

But < thinks it's perfectly clear what ^ meant to say and that it all boiled down to a bit of a semantics bitch about the use of words like 'opinion' (absolutely no offence meant to you, Ads, but both sides weren't communicating each other's points across very effectively).

< broke the YouGame to make this conversation somewhat more natural. < apologises for that.
