Because there already was an (experimental) protocol using the same ethertype (0x800) as IPv4 and version 5 in the header. It was not a full-fledged Internet Protocol, and wasn't called IPv5, but to avoid confusion, the next generation Internet Protocol was given the number 6.

Well I'm just playing the guessing game and it really doesn't matter if you round up your number or not.
I mean I'm sure Bach didn't just stop at a round number because a round number looks good, just doesn't strike me as that kind of guy.
