< didn't have the money to fork out on something this expensive, so < is just settling for some RetroTINK 2x clone for now. < still has the OSSC for now, and < likely won't have to think about setting everything up at once like that until < has a lot more space.

Re: The You Game!
< says that for the consoles that will be ran through the RetroTINK 4k, < will be using the SCART switch for the RGB signals. For consoles with HDMI, < has a couple of HDMI switches < use to go through the surround sound processor. Which is like an HDMI switch too, but due to the relocation process, < will be more reliant on the dedicated HDMI switches now.Hunchman801 wrote: Sat Feb 10, 2024 3:40 pm < wonders if that thing has enough inputs for all those consoles together? It does look like a pretty cool product anyway.
But yeah, not everything will be routed through the RetroTINK 4k, but some of the consoles modded with HDMI may be.

Re: The You Game!
< gets it now, of course the switches are required.
< has enough inputs on <'s TV for all four consoles as of now but < may have to work on a new setup if < gets a new one. Not that < really needs to, as < hasn't played some of those in well over a couple years, but < just likes to have them ready.

Re: The You Game!
< probably has maybe three inputs or so on <'s OLED, but < has been using a single cable for that for sometime now due to < always using a AVR/Pre-Pro for the home theater side of things. < had a wiring diagram, but it's been outdated and will severely be outdated after things get changed up.
Here's what the old wiring diagram looks like though: < will be including a newer HDMI switch into the system from this change though, the current one is more or less for 1080P content only, which is perfectly fine for most of <'s devices. Though < does have a couple of systems on hand, plus the RetroTINK 4k that'll be able to handle higher than that. (Not that < has a 4K TV still, but with the RetroTINK 4k being able to take advantage of 4K + HDR for making things like more CRT like so much more effectively, it's going to be harder to not consider it.
)
Example of the 4K HDMI Switch: Now with the kind of run < has to do for the equipment, < will be using fiber optic HDMI cables so there's no loss in signals for 50 feet (Roughly 15+ meters) or so runs. < ended up with one of Infinite Cable's 8K rated HDMI cables, primarily because it can support 4k 120Hz, so < can future proof things a bit. < wanted at least a 60 feet (Roughly 18 meters) cable, but their shortest when I ordered it was 75 feet (Roughly 22 meters), but they contacted < saying the 75 feet one was out of stock and ETA would be mid June. Uh, < needs a cable by March, not June.
So < ended up with a 100 feet Roughly 30 meters) HDMI cable.
Oh well, < would rather deal with a longer fiber optic cable than an active, let alone passive copper cable. The extra length in fiber doesn't effect performance. It's definitely too long but eh, < can deal with that and not worry about. It'd be a problem if it were too short, though.

< thinks this looks like a cool setup that everything can just be wired up and ready to go like this.

< found out that the same recloser tripped again today while < was at work. < hopes they sort out whatever is causing these failures on FridayPluMGMK wrote: Tue Feb 06, 2024 10:35 pm< thankfully hasn't had a storm knock it out for that long in years, touch wood.Hoodcom wrote: Mon Feb 05, 2024 5:10 pm < is glad that ^ wasn't without power for long in that case. < remember having to go without power for several hours due to severe storms having strong enough winds to knock out power in a lot of places in <'s area. <'s work had power though, but man that night < couldn't sleep at all.
Anyway, today <'s dad got a notice in the post that they're going to disconnect us again next Friday. Presumably this means they've identified the actual root cause and are planning permanent corrective actions. < knew there had to be more to it, reclosers don't just trip for no reason…![]()
< also had a particularly confusing day at work, and then when < powered up their PC at home it had a random fsck failure on the root filesystem which < had to boot into a backup system to fix

Re: The You Game!
Well, studying the power grid is just a hobby / passion
At least in Ireland, there's quite a lot of info out there if you know where to look for it!
< works in electronics and deals with devices that operate at tens of volts and draw nanoamps of current, so it's nice to spend some leisure time at the opposite end of the scale, thinking about kilovolts and kiloamps
< actually first had a phase (no pun intended) of being interested in the grid almost twenty years ago, and liked being reminded of it by seeing certain power lines around the place. Then < got back into it last year when < realized that some of the old lines were being decommissioned, and wanted to know why

Re: The You Game!
< wouldn't know even nearly ass much about electricity as ^ or ^^, but < is still interested in the topic as a whole. < is aware of things when it comes to appliances, and also servicing them. Same goes for electronic components on PCBs etc. < doesn't really know how things work on a larger scale though, such as power grids. At the same time, < would never work with something like that anyway because it would be like a cartoon, where there will be an explosion and all that will be left there are <'s shoes.
Of course, this doesn't mean that < shouldn't still look into it / learn about it, but < is mostly trying to learn Swedish at the moment, along with getting some studying done here and there towards a probable programming career.

Re: The You Game!
< remembers when a bunch of guys at work did a First Aid course, and they got a handbook. The last few pages were about electrocution, and there was a very cartoonish illustration involving a pile of dust with eyes and a mouth where a guy had just touched high-voltage power lines. < found it amusing but also somewhat inappropriate for a serious training booklet!

It's similar to what < was saying, except in a serious case when it comes to learning, < wouldn't expect this. < does remember though, that back in fifth class, they were showing <'s class a tape regarding power lines and being careful around them. < recalls that at one part of it, it showed someone holding a fishing rod upright and walking under a power line, and when they struck it, there was a huge explosion. The whole class thought that it looked funny when it happened, though < does remember finding it funny at the time too. < is aware that there's nothing funny about being electrocuted, but the way this video portrayed it really did seem very cartoonish too, or almost sitcom like, even though that clearly wasn't the message it was trying to spread.
On that note also, this video was basically talking about keeping things like fishing rods down low so they're clear of power lines, but then <'s dad also always told < to keep the rod up off the ground so the eyes won't get damaged. < was being fed conflicting information.

Re: The You Game!
< thinks that's mad about keeping fishing rods low as general advice. It goes to show how effectively your brain filters out power lines because they're up high and you see them everywhere.
< remembers seeing a comment made in passing on a HowStuffWorks article about the power grid many years ago, about how your brain just ignores the grid. It resonated with me because < had just started noticing way more power lines than before

Re: The You Game!
< thinks that's true actually, the fact they're so common makes you not even pay attention to the fact they're there, similar to how your brain automatically filters out the clock ticking, but the tap dripping into the sink could be driving you crazy at the same time.
< has had that phenomenon too, where once you start paying attention to something you can't unsee it. The same even happens if you do something simple, such as pay attention to your own breathing etc. Our brains are weird.

Not quite the same thing, but < recently wrote a bit about old substations in Ireland. To answer Fifo who asked how < has been doing: < just realized today that < probably has a serious chocolate addiction… < was feeling off all day, being argumentative and such, and then realized that < hadn't had any chocolate in about 48 hours, which is unusual
Re: The You Game!
< feels like <'s mother is like that with chocolate too. < likes chocolate of course, and < often buys milk chocolate digestive biscuits even over in Sweden. < might be a little addicted to caffeine though, < always drank a lot of tea / coffee, and < has gotten really into coffee again after realising how passionate Swedes are about it. They essentially see instant coffee as insulting.

< probably isn't that addicted to caffeine, but does drink plenty of tea to avoid falling asleep
But when < doesn't have tea it's not half as bad as not having chocolate...
