Anyway, regarding a split of the article, I suppose the best course of action is to suggest it in the wiki talk page, and go ahead with it if it's consensual, otherwise hold a vote?

They should absolutely be separate articles and I cannot believe they're not to this day lol.

When Origins first came out, I believe the common interpretation of its story was that The Magician and Mister Dark are and always were the same person, that The Magician from Origins and R1 are the same, and that he was always evil from the very beginning.

I can't even put into words how insane that story would be. That would be like if Toad was revealed to be Bowser, and that he was playing both sides from the very beginning, helping Mario for seemingly no reason and allowing himself to be defeated. Also, Toad is now a Yoshi.

Just think about what a betrayal that would have been from a writing perspective. Yeah, that talkative friendly guy in that game you played as a kid was always a villain, of course! I'm sure that's totally what the Rayman 1 scenario writers had in mind 16 years ago. You can tell by the complete lack of hints or foreshadowing.

But that was what I thought all the way back in 2011, when I was 14 years old. It's an amusing memory.

Well, if you assume the educational games are non-canon (which was the consensus at the time) then you're just left with the intro sequence of Rayman 1, and the challenge minigames. Taking those on their own, he comes across as a sort of neutral bystander, and a mercenary / money changer. In that context, it's not such a leap... But yeah, it would ruin the educational games in a heartbreaking way...

I don't think I had too much of an issue with the Magician being Ales Mansay, though I'll concede I don't have the same attachment to Rayman 1 (it may have been my first but I think my imagination and general sensiibilities with the lore and characters of the series are more grounded in Rayman 2/3). Now if they had pulled something like that with a character like say, Ly...I probably would've felt a bit more upset.

That being said, he can't have been the Magician...didn't say "BRAVO" anywhere nearly as frequently, total imposter.
