I didn't really enjoy Encanto, but it was just for multiple things. I never really noticed that at all. Maybe I can be oblivious again and not notice it here, too. I also HATE the pop covers they do. I'm definitely expecting one here, because they always feature one in the credits sometimes.

Accidentally booked tickets early... Saw it today. Came home and started writing immediately.

I loved Moana 2. It's one of the most visually stunning and amazing movies I've seen. The pacing sucked but I didn't care. I know I'm being a hypocrite because I said "people are gonna be too amazed by the visuals to care about the movie" but actually it will distract you from everything that's going on. There's basically no storyline, there are terrible cuts and transitions, but I think this was amazing.

That being said, don't watch this in theaters as I did. I had watched a review of the movie and it basically talked about how this movie was supposed to be series but was rushed and turned into a movie, and that it was all outsourced to Canada. I don't want anyone to give this film money really because it tells Disney that they can just do this again and nobody will care. I know everyone will line up to see this, but I'm just giving you a heads up. If you have Disney+ go stream it... Or do the 2nd word in RPC. You are not missing out on anything other than unfunny jokes and humor that was funny around 8-9 years ago. Trust me.

Otherwise, 7/10 movie. 11/10 for visuals. Best Disney movie in 2024. (not counting DvW... that is actually the BEST movie of 2024.)

Paths of Glory - Amazing anti-war movie, Kubrick never fails to make a great film. 9/10

Wicked - Pretty good, don't got much to say on it. 7/10

Wizard of Oz (1925) - Awful, painfully unfunny, boring, and shares almost no similarities with the book. One of the worst book adaptations I've ever seen. 2/10

There were multiple adaptations of The Wizard of Oz before the 1939 version.

Ah, I’d expect a 99 year old silent movie to be pretty poor

I watched several movies recently:

Stand By Me, a classic I'd watched once before. An adventure involving 4 lads who go searching for a dead body. Has some incredibly funny and touching moments.

The Sixth Sense, which I'd never seen but who's twist ending was already spoiled for me. Despite that I thought it was excellent and the acting, especially of the kid Haley Joel Osment and the mother Toni Colette was amazing. If you somehow don't know the twist, you should watch this movie before it's spoiled for you, seeing as it's the quintessential twist ending movie. But it's definitely still worth watching if you already know the ending.

The Substance, very well directed, interesting camera shots and use of colours, some wonderfully gruesome practical effects, thought provoking and a very cathartic and hilarious ending sequence. Highly recommend!

Saw bits of this on TV as a kid (it was a bit too much for me at the time ). My mother spoiled me on the ending as we were watching. Not sure whether she figured it out by watching or had seen it before…

Ha, yes it's definitely something I can see being hard to stomach for the general viewer, there's some very creatively disturbing imagery at times. I personally couldn't stop laughing out loud at the ridiculously gory ending but maybe that says more about my sense of humour than the film

I liked the substance, but I didn't get blown away by it. I guess I was too hyped up because of the amount of people surprised by how good the movie is. Same thing happened with Smile 2, I heard it was better than the first and then I guess I expected more of it.

I really liked The Northman though.

I watched a minor Soviet classic known from 1967 as "Вертикаль" ("Vertical") in English:

It is a story about a group of mountain-climbers, the first full feature film (co)-directed by prominent Soviet and Russian film director Govorukhin (to whom I'm impartial).

However, it also marks the debut of the famous Soviet era poet - Vladimir Vysotsky - whose poems/songs I greatly appreciate - not as an actor, but as an actor who writes and performs his own songs in movies. The four songs (or poems) he performs in this film, plus another one that ultimately did not make the cut, are among his most well-known ones, and are not bad in themselves.

Somehow, despite being a fan of Vysotsky's work since I was a teenager, and knowing about the existence of "Vertical" since roughly the same time period, I have not watched it, ever, until last week. It is not an amazing piece of filmography, being basically a "graduation project" of a pair of young directors, however it is quite well-done and entertaining - a good "adventure movie" of its time, and the depictions of alpinism are quite impressive given the rudimentary equipment and "state of the art" back in the 1960s. The actors trained at mountaineering for the production, and reached a basic level of competence (although many of the complicated shots were done by stunt doubles).

I went to see the latest Lord of the Rings movie.

While the plot is solid (not spectacular though), it's presentation is unworthy of being shown in the big screen.

The anime style is not my cup of tea in the first place, I don't associate it with Lords of the Rings on top of that, but even if those two points are purely subjective, the 2D animation on a 2-per-1 basis with (rather stunning) backgrounds clearly animated in 3D at 60 fps is a stark contrast that look horrible in theaters.

Worth the watch once it hits platforms or DVD, but I would advice not to waste money for the theaters.

Not a movie, but finished watching "The Penguin" mini-series (8 episodes) last week. It's good, although I don't like how it ends.

I get why you don't like how it ends, but I also don't see it ending any other way because Oswald is a slimy son of a -.
The only part about the show I didn't like is the batsignal at the end.

I'd say them choosing to end it exactly like this is exactly to show that he is an unredeemable piece of sh!t. Up until the ending, there is a small hope that he has at least some positivity in him. When he lectures Sofia in the car about how she never understood the little people and how important it is to give them a chance and that this is exactly what he's been doing and why he managed to beat her. You could think that maybe he actually believes this, but what he does to Victor in the end shows that the speech was just another piece of bullshit.
As for the bat signal, this is just obvious setup for whatever next movie/show they plan to do. Basically Oz saying - "now no one can stop me", and, nope - Batman will. It does feel a bit forced and perhaps childish.

Oh yeah I agree, this is how I see it too. I just really hope the batsignal just signifies the start of The Batman movie from 2022, and it does not set up the inclusion of Batman in the TV show. I don't need any capes in my crime show.

Since we're talking about TV, anyone seen House M.D? I love the show but seasons 7-8 aren't the best. Haven't seen the whole show yet but I can tell it's slowly kindof degrading. Still a good show though.

And also, I saw Adam Sandler's Crazy Eight Nights again and I gotta say, it was not as good as I remembered it to be.

I wanna murder Whitey. Who the hell thought that was a good voice to give him?

Yeah, I love House, it's such a fun and intriguing show. During its original run, I was like 9 or so, I'd sometimes sit in on my parents watching it, and earlier this year I just rewatched the first 3 seasons for the first time since. I'm surprised how many episodes I remembered... they really stuck in my mind as a kid.

Mhm, it's really not a very good movie in itself, but the animation is weirdly amazing. It's so smooth and detailed, the colours are gorgeous.

Just went to the Interstellar 10th anniversary IMAX limited rerelease last night, I took my friend and his wife for Christmas. And wow. Ever since I first saw this movie in theatres in 2014 it became an all-time favourite, and definitely the most amazing thing I'd ever seen on the big screen. And on an even bigger screen now, it was just something else. I'm almost speechless, it was beautiful... I love this movie so much. The acting, the cinematography, the love for real science, the music, the grand scale, god, it's a genuine masterpiece. It leaves you feeling so inspired, it's transcendental.

What was extra cool was the fact it's only playing once a day for two weeks, and this is one of the only cinemas in Canada showing it, so it was completely sold out. Most people there were dedicated fans already, roaring applause after it ended, and everyone was talking to each other after. Never been to another movie experience like that
