Which one is that?
If I remember in the tower when I entered I punched the switch and then immediately grabbed the platform that rose the highest. Rayman remained at the same height while the platform kept rising so I could grab the platform again once it stopped. Skipped all the other platforms that way, I find it might be useful for my next scoring attempt! :D
I only remember jumping on the platform before it had a chance to rise.
That might actually work too so I don't have to grab, maybe I'll give it a try on PC the next time
You have to be pretty quick with your timing though.
I think PC is somewhere in the middle with running speed. XBox was fastest, and GC was slowest, no?
Is it about running speed or jump height, or both?

I think it's mainly jump height, but he runs a fraction faster on Xbox. It's not noticeable unless you do a long gem combo and notice you make it further before the detergent expires. It's noticeable on LOTLD1 on the first combo.

Interesting. Isn't that also the one with the highest jump (i.e. most compromised framerate)?

Yeah that level happens to have a choppy framerate on part 2, meaning you can jump the balloons. Playing at 50Hz makes him jump even higher, but I played at 60Hz.

So I guess it also affects running speed. Or at least relative rates of detergent lapse and covering a certain distance.

I never checked if the refresh rate makes a difference to the running speed actually, maybe the detergent is just lasting longer.

So playing on a weaker system can give you an advantage in R3?

I remember playing the first Bejewelled on a really old laggy computer. You'd have all the time in the world to look for the next move while the last one was still processing.

On a PC that can't manage to get 60fps you can actually jump way higher. It's pretty weird, since even when the framerate drops, the game itself isn't actually slowing down. I realised it one day when I tried to play it on a really old crappy computer using Intel GMA graphics.

Maybe you can use a recent computer but limit the amount of resources Rayman 3 can use?

Probably by setting the GPU to a very low clock manually.

I think framerate-limiting is something that can be done, and has been explored. I don't know how legit it would be considered though…

I remember trying it last year at 30fps and the jump height was ridiculous.

Rayman 3 does something stupid with the framerate though doesn't it? It takes whatever rate it should be running at, and multiplies by 1.2 to convert from PAL to NTSC, even though it's the PC version! :fou2:

But can you jump out of the map at 1 fps?

I wonder if there's a way to cap it to 1fps.

Maybe if you ran 10 instances of the game at once?

Theoretically, I'm sure it's possible.

I do remember that when I tried to play Rayman 3 on my Grandad's PC years ago, the framerate was so low that I couldn't steer Murfy far enough in the very first level, so he just kept bringing me round in circles because I couldn't get any red lums! :P
