yeah people tend to forget that but they actually play it as a serious thing when rayman is presumed dead, which you don't see in many games with children in mind
i suppose this is what i miss from this series, the fact that it used to be something substantial other than just a game for kids.
in rayman 2 especially, rayman teaches globox that it's okay to be afraid of things that are dangerous, and they don't make rayman look like a snarky asshole and globox an outright coward , it really shows how their friendship is true and tangible even if the game doesn't focus too much on them,
if the franchise went in a more rayman 2 esque direction i think the series would greatly benefit, and carve itself a niche in the platforming mascot genre
if you think about it, mario has the fun and whimsical games that are made purely to entertain, sonic has sometimes deeper stories for young teens giving them the edge they so desire, crash is a bumbling moron that has very stupid and slapsticky games
rayman though doesn't have this luxury, and the ubiart games didn't help since now he's like a mix of mario, sonic and crash, it doesn't feel like rayman anymore, if you took origins and legends, and replaced the whole cast, it wouldn't be much like rayman imo

It's honestly kind of ironic that this is the direction they went for in these games when before he's the one who decided to go for something deeper and more serious for Rayman 2, wanting to focus more on the story (as I've read in l'Histoire de Rayman years ago). It seems like his vision on the series depended on his mood at the time and that sadly resulted in such inconsistencies.
It's very sad when you see all the efforts that were poured into the lore in Rayman 2, especially in the Knowledge of the World and its magical world. The UbiArt idea should have been kept for either something that would explicitely have been an alternate universe, or a seperate franchise with its own characters and objects which could still have had some "links" to Rayman like Tonic Trouble.
What’s with people and the r2 story? There’s much better stories out there and it just doesn’t suit a rayman game.
I guess that’s an unpopular opinion?
As well as Geiger's fantastic points, I'll add this was the second game when the franchise was still searching for its identity, so imo you can't really claim it doesn't suit a Rayman game especially when R3 and most handheld games followed its story style one way or another (including Rayman 1 GBC despite adapting the first game), thus making it the most established Rayman style in the old games.
Most video games at the time needed a second entry to fully establish themselves, which either became the basis for later (like Crash 2 or Spyro 2), or a failed experiment which proves the first entry was the perfect formula as it was and won't be much inspiration later (like Zelda II).

I don't think Rayman Origins and Rayman Legends are bad games at all... They're great, with a unique artstyle. But I don't know, it isn't all about that and that's why I prefer the original trilogy. I miss some kind of complexity there (dialogues, different personalities...).

The personalities of the characters and the world are just what made Rayman, you know? It really made it stand out in comparison to other platformers.

How about we settle this whole thread with 7 words:
Rayman is rayman; do what you like

i have played both origins and legends, the latter i played it 4 times to get a feel of what i actively despised about this game.
and overtime i found more and more things that i disliked about it:
it's a game that promotes gatcha like stuff and mobile game mechanics like daily bonuses (the creatures giving you lums everyday), the wishy washy story and the shameless reusal of assets from origins are not the only things that make me actively dislike legends as a "work of art"
the deeper you look into it the more it falls apart like dust, the worlds are even copy pasted from origins!
in origins you have: Jibberish Jungle, Desert of Dijiridoos, Gourmand Land, Sea of Serendipity and Mystical Pique
this means: a nature themed first world, a flight based world with instruments, a food themed world, an underwater world and a mountain world
in legends you have the same stuff but with a different coat of paint! there's teensies in trouble, toad story, fiesta de los muertos, 1000 lums under the sea and olympus maximus
meaning, again: a nature themed first world, a flight based world with instruments, a food themed world, an underwater world and a mountain world
so basically it's like when mario goes "forest, desert, snow, volcano, underwater and clouds"
it's so STUPID and they thought people didn't realize

Despite being successful (especially in the UK), the first game had many complaints regarding its difficulty even back then, and the devs were quite understanding as they didn't actually made playtests of the game.
Then, when they started Rayman 2 as a 2D game very close to the original, they realised how well 3D games would be doing at the time and decided to fully change their plans when they saw footage of Crash Bandicoot (which made them realise the possibilities of the 3D world).
Then they experimented with Tonic Trouble and they ended up making the Rayman 2 we know today, with its 2D prototype only being playable as a bonus of the PS1 release.
When Rayman 2 released, it not only got more success but was praised for fixing the difficulty issues of its predecessor. So, it became the new basis for what Rayman should be at the time.

I remember reading about how ancel wanted rayman 2 to feel more like a movie rather than a game, so he made it super easy so that no player would get stuck in a difficult part, this sentiment was going to be shared with phoenix's rayman 4 which makes me even sadder thinking about how that game will never see the light of day

But I guess they tried the old formula for the third title then

I did not like the Rayman 4 we were going to get, honestly. Phoenix’s always felt like it was going to accomplish bridging the series more. To have so many call-backs to Rayman 1 would have just stitched it together so well for me, and that’s why I’m sad about it.
As for the one we were going to get, I love André as a returning character and Monik, but the plot just feels too far removed from the previous three games. I was never a fan of the industrial feeling the Rabbids bring to the world. You ride these hyperrealistic animals instead of creatures that look like they would fit in the Glade as well. It clashes like a sandbox game with assets from many sources. I get that’s the point to contrast Rayman’s world, but it conflicts with the aesthetic too much.

yeah actually, rayman 2 has an epic story with worldwide consequences about the world being slowly driven to starvation, the main villain is known across the galaxy as a cruel tyrant that vaporizes planets after draining them of their natural resources, with an entirely orchestrated soundtrack that features motifs that reoccur throughout the whole game, a really slick 3d gameplay that only lacked in the combat but made up for it in fluidity and responsiveness, all tied together with a final showdown against a powerful madman piloting a huge meck inside the motor of the ship that's used to enslave the world
even rayman 3 ends with a fallen champion driven mad by the loss to rayman, fueled by the twisted powers of a dark god, making him unable to think rationally as he transports rayman and globox into an alternate dimension so he can consume everything in it's sight
legends has a big luchador man and a big bat made of fuzzy balls, wow how fun
your response sounds fueled by your emotions, discarding any criticism as "muh muh thing sucks lol" really speaks volumes at your inability to judge things without your personal bias getting in the way
