Yeah, that's pretty dumb when you're being chased all the time.
Oh gee, do I feel dumb! I forgot we didn't have time to walk in the other levels where running was an option.
To be fair, running was hardly ever an option. You had to do it quite a lot even when you weren't being chased, to gain momentum for a jump, to avoid traps, etc. The Lum chains didn't help. Granted, there were some levels that started out calm, like Castle in the Sky, which I mentioned previously. But even in that level, you were ultimately forced to run from vines. Most levels are like that (probably over half of the game in total required you to run).
Anyway, the running doesn't actually bother me too much, and I don't think it prevents one from looking at the scenery. It's just that, if the levels in the game were a bit smaller and more detailed than the big running courses that they are now, perhaps the developers would be able to design them as real places (like they did for Mansion of the Deep) and breathe some more life into them. As they are now, the levels are just levels, and the scenery is just scenery. I also appreciate the scenery as you do - it's well drawn and complements the levels well, but they're semi-random backgrounds for platforming courses, not worlds.

Hmm, Castle in the Sky. I got the impression that I was moving through the ruins of a castle in the process of falling apart, which may originally have been part of the castle in the background.

As for stopping to admire the scenery, I've found myself doing that to a similar extent in all of the games really. I never really felt the need to do it in any of them until a few years ago, somehow.

The Lum Chains? Really? They stay in one place and their double value never expire unlike the Lum King's. The only time they do go away were in the Challenge Levels. They move fast but even then they stay in one area.

Recently put back all the music of Rayman 2 and Rayman 3, and I still feel like Rayman 2 lacks the variety in genre that the other games had.

I agree. When I play in a real console it disturbs me a bit the graphical quality.

Then stop using that shitty yellow composite cable and try RGB or if possible Component. The quality is bloody inferior if you stick with composite.

There isn't really a purpose to using a filter like that on a 3D game, though, since you can just force a higher resolution when using an emulator, which is going to unconditionally look nicer than an upscaled 320x240 image.

I'm guessing you were using your TV's composite input, and a poor-quality 240p60 signal incorrectly detected and fuckified into 480i30 that is horribly A/D converted, horribly deinterlaced, and horribly upscaled naturally isn't going to look fantastic.

What I use is AV-to-SCART to be able to play in my PS2.

Not quite sure what you mean. Are you using an RGB SCART cable that's plugged directly from your console into your TV? Bear in mind that not all SCART cables carry RGB, many only carry simulated composite.

I believe she means that Composite to Scart adapter which technically again is just composite, since nothing more than just that is being carried over.

Please do yourself a favour and try to get this: http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.vi ... 1177096096

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audio_and_video_connector plus a SCART adapter.

@Emshomar I do am aware of the existence of a Component being sold by Sony many long time ago, the thing is they probably sold few in shops at the time because I do not remember to have seen them or else I would obviously do the same as I did for Wii back in its release: I found the official Composite and bought it to improve image.

Wait, now I am confused.

For PS2, I play in the way in my previous post (the one that contained a link). For Wii games I play with a Component (the 5 coloured cable).

Yeah, the video that travels along the yellow cable is called composite, and it's basically known for being awful, since unlike component YPbPr/RGB or S-Video, all the different "parts" of the analog video signal are carried along the same cable which leads to interference, and thus, horrible dotcrawl and color issues. If it doesn't bother you, that's fine, but my point was just that I think it's a bit silly to complain about your PS2's video quality when you're using what is literally the lowest-quality signal the PS2 outputs. :P

Also, to clarify, all the SCART connector does is transfer the existing signal to the appropriate pins; it doesn't affect the image quality in any way.

It does not surprise me at all since I knew that the quality is lower. I can always consider the purchase of the component cable in future.

I suppose many didn't play Dreamcast version to know its superiority.
