Maybe they could have got rid of DOS limitations this way.
Depending on how it was written, porting a DOS application to Windows may be non-trivial. It was probably deemed not having a high enough ROI (return of investment), when considering the expected revenue they would get from all the Designer/Forever/Collector packs.

If you are talking about making a Windows port that is completely reprogrammed from scratch, to be identical to the PSX version - that requires even more work, and probably a full team working on it. Kinda hard to justify, compared to working on a proper sequel.

Besides, early Windows applications are not very compatible with modern versions. It is usually easier to get Rayman 1 to run reliably under DOSBox, than it is to get Rayman 2 to run under XP or later (although GOG version of Rayman 2 made the compatibility better).

Certainly!

I think making Rayman 1 a native Windows application would have involved bringing in DirectX, which would have entailed a lot of work, and been of questionable value given that the game was 2D…

I know of a couple of games from the mid-late nineties that had two separate PC versions - one for DOS and one for Windows: Earthworm Jim 1, Mortal Kombat 3, Mortal Kombat Trilogy. I think that in all cases these were developed as separate applications and not ports of one another, which makes for some interesting differences. Also, in all cases, the Windows versions are notoriously hard to get running properly on modern OS/hardware, or have some limitations.

Just a question

Would anyone here call rayman 1 "just bullshit"

In terms of dufficulty

I can only think of one part where the game is slightly unfair but overall I don't think such an opinion is warranted.

Me neither tbh

It takes patience and learning to master but honestly?
Its not too bad aside from a few spots like space mama or eat at joey part 5

I was arguing with someone about it, and they posted screenshots of bongo hills part 3, saying its bullshit and almost impossible to dodge when, honestly it kinda isnt

They were also calling rayman 2 boring and 3 bad so
I think they just hate rayman

The only game that I felt like calling "Just Bullshit" recently is Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. I tried playing it just year and was simply failing utterly against the earliest bosses. And this is now. With almost three decades of experience playing action games.

Contrary to that, I could beat Rayman 1 without cheats as a teenager (although I did cheat during my first playthrough). So it's definitely not as unfair as some games.

Same here, if I managed to beat it as a kid then it can't possibly be that hard (I'm not particularly good at video games in general).

Same here too
I beat the game countless times and only the first few runs were really hard

Bongo Hills part 3....that's the area with the maracas rockets right? I don't find that area difficult, or any of the areas in Bongo Hills tbh. If anything there's only a few specific places where I think the game can be challenging enough to call unfair.

I agree that some patience and practice is definitely needed to finish the game, but honestly, there are probably tougher games out there. Rayman 1 isn't that bad in comparison.

The only part I found a bit unfair was the infamous jump in Pencil Pentathlon. It's just not clear what you're supposed to do.

One of the worst things about that is that they put it at the end of the whole level, so if you can't figure it out, you could well end up losing all your progress on the two previous segments, which are absolutely beastly, even if it's obvious what you're "supposed" to do in each one.

It’s surprisingly easy, actually: don’t run, just walk. It’ll get you in the right spot automatically every time.

Now how does this even work in the Jaguar version without the sliding mechanics?
