Japanese Versions of Gex 1 and Gex 2

Post by OCG »

Hello everyone. Today, I recived Japanese Gex from eBay so I decided to share the game with you people.
Japanese version of Gex is in my opinion best one because text is on English, opening intro is on Japanese, and when Gex talks during levels, his jokes are still on English so everyone can understand them. Japanese release of Gex is very similar to Rayman's because they both share same factors of having English text and only thing on Japanese is introduction. BTW for some reason Gex's voice is automaticly turned off by deafult so go to options to enable it.

Use 7zip to extract it. If you need some more games, request me to upload them

UPDATE:
I shared some thoughts about Gex 1 and Gex 2 Japanese versions on this website:

I will copy text here because there is some interesting information:

Many people even from Japan that I talked about Gex did not know this, but Gex 1 and Gex 2 also had Japanese releases. I purchased both of them. I decided to tell you what changes were made and stuff like that.

Gex 1 does not have many changes. The one of the changes is cover. The other one is Japanese dubbed intro (sadly I do not know is Japanese voice actor for Gex 1):

When introduction is finished, player must first go to options to enable Gex's voice in game because it is for some reason automatically disabled. Main menu is on English. When you start the game, you will noticed that info text is on Japanese. As for in-game voice, it's no other than legendary Dana Gould. That is right people, they decided to keep Original voice in Japanese version which is pretty cool in my opinion. Gex's voice in Gex 1 was only dubbed on Japanese on intro. Rest of the game is same as the American version.

But now, oh boy, Gex 2

For god knows what reasons, Gex 2 is not even Gex 2 in Japan. It is a completely different game. It's called Spin Tail. Main character is not even called Gex. He is called Reno. They did not even change model of character in-game so whats the point of changing the name? It can just confuse people who played Gex 1 because in Japan, Gex 1 was still known as Gex 1 and main character's name was Gex. Changing name to Reno and game's title so it does not look like a sequel makes no sense to me. Did they really thought they would sell game better by doing those things. At least, Pandemonium in Japan when they changed game's name and characters name, they also changed in-game models and cutscenes. Gex 2 did nothing of that. Only game's name change and character's name change. He still looks same like Gex so why call him Reno instead of Gex?
They also got rid of Dana Gould and replaced him with Senda Mitsuo (Japanese comedian). I don't know what to think of that change because it was probably to make jokes funnier for Japanese. Bottom line, I actually think that changing character and game's name is what made game sell bad and that is reason why was Gex 3 never released in Japan or any part of Asia.
If you want some extra information about Spin Tail (Japanese Gex 2), here is this website:

And here is intro of Japanese Gex 2:

Have a good day everyone!

I've never played Gex, but I've seen images of him, and blimey, the picture of Gex on the JP box art doesn't look anything like the ones I've seen.

This Gex is just on cover. He looks different in game (same like in US Version).
