Motion sickness
I thought this could be a good topic to discuss since we are all gamers around here and have had different experiences when playing, including not so good ones.
What I would like to talk about in particular is not strange to anyone who reads game manuals or plays modern systems: motion sickness.
I've played hundreds of games since my first contact with this kind of universe and unfortunately there is a game or other that makes me unable to experience it properly due to motion sickness. In worst situations I can also feel simultaneously dizzyness and headaches. Due to these symptoms I am forced to either give up playing the game in question or doing lots of breaks/playing short bits of time.
I would like to know if anyone has ever experienced problems of this genre and in which games.
For my case:
- Mario Kart: Double Dash!! -> I suspect it is related with the really bright colours of the game. I cannot play this for more than 30 minutes each time.
- Super Mario Sunshine -> Same reason as above. (Fortunately I 100% the game despite of the problem)
- Starfox Adventures -> It is sad that a good game like this forced me to give up in it. I had to stop in a 90% progression because I was stuck in a horrendous part where you need to blow up four switches and destroying shooting ships with horrible flashing yellow lights, not to mention the constant camera movements. It was probably the only time I had to use a non-official controller with a turbo button to help me skip this part. And to make things worse, the area right after is a boss battle with camera movements and yellow/orange lights everywhere. I had to give up in the game for real due to the constant motion sicknesses I was getting in a short space of time.
I am suspecting that I also suffer this in Psychonauts but I need to try few more times until I am sure of it.

Re: Motion sickness
Thankfully, only game where I experienced this so far is a game from series I almost never play:
Call of Duty: World at War – Final Fronts
I borrowed this game in 2008 from one guy and I felt very sick playing it. Funny how no other FPS game did that to me. Ah well, I am not fan of that game so I can live with that
I do admit however that on 3DS I almost never play with 3D on due to eye suffering issues. I have something strange with my eyes. when I focus on some object, I see everything else doubled. For example when I focus on my computer screen, everything else in my room I see doubled. When I focus on rest, I see screen doubled. I tried doing same thing with looking at index finger in front of me. Either I see everything normal in front of me or two fingers instead of only one. So you can imagine how much 3D on 3DS affects my eyes.
Also, my mother experianced motion sickness while playing Croc
That is one of the first games she played and she could never play for too long.

Re: Motion sickness
I never had issues with Croc.
There are a moment or other that I felt a bit bad when playing Portal but it was only happening when I was moving the camera too much quickly.

Re: Motion sickness
I have issues with many games, especially two I really wanted to play : Metroid Prime and Bioshock.
Right now I'm feeling it a bit with Spec Ops : The Line, but it's minor.

Re: Motion sickness
I don't have motion sickness, but I almost had when driving a MClaren in Need For Speed Hot pursuit at 420 KM/h in 2008.

Re: Motion sickness
I've never had motion sickness bit I feel sick whenever I play Minecraft for more than half an hour. I don't know what it is, I guess I've just played the game for so long that whenever I see the world it looks so fake and tinny, it actually makes me feel a bit puky. I can only stand playing creative now, and not for long periods.
It's got nothing to do with motion though, just a psychological thing I think.

I'm actually really curious how one with motion sickness would handle that game given its extremely fast pace.emshomar wrote:Not to forget F-Zero GX.

Re: Motion sickness
I can't really say games generally give me motion sickness at home but I do have problems even reading in the car or on the bus so you can imagine what attempting to play handheld games would be like.
I do remember getting ill after playing on the virtual boy for only like 5 minutes but then that's because that thing is garbage and Wario Land VB should have been on other consoles.

Re: Motion sickness
Don't tell me anything, I also suffer motion sickness if I dare to read/play during a car travel.
I dunno if I would like to try Virtual Boy, I simply dislike the graphical look of the games, not to mention the huge goggles.

Re: Motion sickness
I suffer motion sickness in car too even if I turn around to get something from backseat
For gaming, it is even worse. Funny thing how my brother is exact opposite. He feels motion sickness in car if he doesn't do anything but if he is playing game he is fine.

Re: Motion sickness
I consider my self very lucky that I do not normally get motion sickness while playing any video game (even on 3DS with the 3D on). The only time I ever feel motion sick is in the car, and only if I am reading or playing games.
Re: Motion sickness
I can play 3DS games with the 3D in max as long I am not inside a car.
Re: Motion sickness
I never get motion sickness, while playing games or otherwise. But my head does start to hurt after an hour or so of gaming, which is probably due to persistent focus and the fact I don't actually have a very long attention span. It's unusual for me to spend more than 30 minutes watching one thing on tv or playing one game.

Re: Motion sickness
I also don't think my attention span is quite high. Now imagine what's trying to listen to a teacher talking for 3 hours
.
Re: Motion sickness
Never had motion sickness, but I really get sucked into the game worlds sometimes, e.g. dodge stuff along with my character or lean upwards when jumping in-game. Often I focus too hard on the game and that results in headaches.
