Why is the sequel always dark and edgy?
Rayman 2, Jak II and countless other video games have done it.

I don't really know the answer to that question. 
Though I wouldn't say all sequels are dark and edgy. Sonic 2, for example, is neither imo.

Yes, two "dark" sequels is not statistically enough to prove that all the sequels are darker.
