Rayman at TV Tropes

With the discovery of a decent number of TV Tropes readers here at Rayman PC, we have decided to create a topic to discuss the matter of editing Rayman's page on said site. For those of you who aren't familiar with TV Tropes, here is a paragraph from the main page that explains the gist of their intentions:
Tropes are devices and conventions that a writer can reasonably rely on as being present in the audience members' minds and expectations. On the whole, tropes are not clichés. The word clichéd means "stereotyped and trite." In other words, dull and uninteresting. We are not looking for dull and uninteresting entries. We are here to recognize tropes and play with them, not to make fun of them.
We are going to set out to find other Tropes that fit the Rayman series. They can apply to the main series, handheld spin-offs, racing games, or the Raving Rabbids games (although games from RGH onwards should only be discussed on the Raving Rabbids page). It would also be helpful to discover all-new tropes that we can subsequently create a page for and name after Rayman. The series has already named Band Land and Raymanian Limbs.

So if you want to help out, log onto TV Tropes and get started.

I know there's Zombie Robot Ninja Pirates up there, but surely Mecha-Mooks deserves a mention? Almost all enemies in Rayman 2 are 2-hit wonder Robo-Pirates who crumble into mechanical nothingness upon defeat. Mooks if I ever saw 'em.

Sounds about right.

...Looks like ParadoxJuice added it already. I'm late to the party! x'D

You'll have to start at YKTTW.

You'll still have to explain tv tropes a bit more to me. I never fully understood it.

Just browse the site for a while. You'll understand it eventually.

The site is a wiki, which means anyone can edit it. It is a wiki for various tropes. Each article describes the trope, then gives examples organized by medium (video games, literature, television, etc.). Certain articles have forum like extensions. For example, stories of any kind (literature, television, etc.) usually have a 'Wild Mass Guessing' page where people come up with Epileptic Trees and discuss them. There are Troper Tales, where people give personal, real life examples of a trope. There are things that bug me, where people describe something about a story which bugs them. And there is the Laconic version, the entire article in a few words.

YKTTW is where you suggest a new article. People will tell you if the article already exists. If it doesn't, comments will be given, examples will be added, a rough draft of the article will be formed and eventually evolve into a full fledged article, at which point it's launched. Some pages are 'Just for Fun' (self explanatory) and some are 'Subjective', where all of the examples depend on the readers opinion. There is Sugar Wiki, which writes about extremely optimistic things, and Dark Wiki, the polar opposite of Sugar Wiki.

That is the gist of TV Tropes.

What I suggest is this...

Look up a work of fiction you like. Anything you're interested in, whether it's a book, movie, game, or even a celebrity. The obvious example I'm using here is Rayman, since otherwise I have no idea what your interests are. But just go to the main page and search for it in the search bar and go to the page.

Read through it, you'll see all sorts of links to different pages on the wiki. If you're not sure what one means or want to know more about it, open it in a new tab, and either go to that page or keep reading the first one, opening each term you don't know in a new tab. When you're done, go to another one of the pages you opened in a new tab. Rinse and repeat with every term you're curious about.

I know that at least in my case, it ends up in a very, very long Wiki Walk. And TV Tropes is definitely a form of Browser Narcotic as well...

*hint* the above paragraph is a bit like how something on TV Tropes would work. Links to a page or 'trope' that describes what the writer is talking about in a universal term; if you don't get what they're talking about, you can learn about it by clicking the link.

...Essentially, what Saber said. Browse the site for a while, and see how long it takes for you to get out... =P

We need to make as many links to the Rayman page from other pages as possible.

I added Temple of Doom. Can't believe it wasn't already there.

We also need to make sure all of the links reciprocate each other. If there's a link/wick on the Rayman page to a relevant trope, make sure that the linked trope also mentions Rayman in the 'examples' section, and vice versa. If you find a trope that has Rayman listed as an example but is not on the Rayman page, add it! New examples are important, but it's also important to make sure that the existing ones go both ways.

Should we start listing examples specific to Rayman Origins? Or should we wait until there's more trope-invoking content?

I'd suggest we wait... although there's quite a lot already floating around. 'Heterosexual Life Partners' unfortunately springs to mind.

Wouldn't Rayman Origins fall under "Super Hero Origins" as well? The Rabbids games would also have something to do with "I Am Not Shazam".

It's really great to see the Rayman page finally getting some love! :mryellow:

On another note... recently someone added the Multiple Choice Past trope to the article, with one example being Jimmy from Hereitscool. I don't know if it's just me, but wouldn't it make more sense to put that under 'What Could Have Been'? It never became official(thankfully) so I'm not sure it should be listed there. I'm really not too sure so I didn't feel like it'd be a great idea to edit it straight out without seeing what other people thought, so... whaddya you guys think? ;)

I agree. If it isn't canon, I don't think that "Multiple Choice Past" should apply.

Replace it with something about Rayman 1.

"Rayman has saved the world many times, most notably defeating the evil Mr. Dark and saving all of the limbless people."
