Rayman 2 on vista - installation won't run

Post by Monkeyface »

Hey there,

I've stalked this forum on occasion but I haven't found what I'm looking for this time, so here I am! Long-time of Rayman 2 in particular :)

Anyway, trying to install my Rayman 2 on my computer (vista) as a few weeks ago my system crashed and I had to reinstall everything and... ugh. Weird thing is, now Rayman won't install! I try to run the installation and the mouse does its "loading" thing but nothing happens. I've run my computer in safe mode and it worked then but unfortunately it was unable to install due to certain applications not working (in safe mode, that is).

Anyone have any ideas?

Sorry if this is in the wrong place!

Any help appreciated :)

There's already a topic like this, only about windows 7. The game is a 16bit one which is not supported by your OS (operation system, which is Vista). Your best bet is buying the game on GOG.com for a small fee. I've 100% completed the game from that site and it has no errors or anything.

Or you can (cough) decide to download a torrent and risk infection.

Nah, do whatever you need to do to get that awesome game running again.
I don't see how Rayman 2 isn't supported by Vista; my friend has Vista and his R2 game works perfectly fine.

The problem is there are 2 Vistas actually, IA-32 and x86-64 one. The 32-bit Vista (and 7) have notably higher compatibility for obvious reasons (R2 is run directly on Windows, not on WoW64).

My Rayman 2 on disk used to work perfectly fine on Windows 7 until I changed to 64 bit. I heard it had something to do with that 64bit wouldn't support 16bit stuff.

Rayman 3 still works, but only if I install it in a language other than english. :boon: I could switch the language back to english after that though. But again, isn't that strange?

This was strange. Wild guess: English installer utilises some fancy stuff that was not possible with non-English letters, and it messes with Win7.

R2 is not 16-bit, but it is one of earlier Windows programs neverthless and requires special treatment. It still was quite ahead of its time, Alt+Tab does crash it only if it happens during loadings (the same with RM BTW).

Unfortunately 64-bit Windowses have to utilise something called Windows On Windows64 to run "legacy" apps, and while it has far greater compatibility than Windows On Windows32 (Win 3.1 layer in 95-XP) or all type MS-DOS modes, well, sometimes it fails. Seeing Wine seems to support "hacked" R2 it's time to port it to Windows, isn't it? :D

Naming of 8086 originating processors, which includes IA-32, AMD64 and EM64T, varies as they are obviously not standarized.

From what I've read, x86 is 32-bit architecture, and x86-64 is 64-bit architecture

Not really, but from Vista viewpoint, it's kinda enough. On the other hand you won't run Vista on (even overclocked) 8086.
