Rayman 3: Lost in Translation

Rayman 3 uses voice acting more extensively than any other game in the franchise. With its development studio being stationed in France, most of the dialogue would naturally be written in French first and translated to other languages later. However, there are somethings that just don’t translate well into other languages. What exactly may have been lost when translating Rayman 3 from French to other languages?

I know in the german dub the "you were nicer in rayman 2" doesnt exist

And one every version, except ps2, rayman sometimes still grunts a french sound

Voted French. I think I actually understood the game better when I finally played it in French (about ten years after I first played it in English).

The Teensie Highway music also contains a sample of Rayman shouting "Ouaaais !", which sounds strange if you're playing in any other language. ("Why does he say 'weah' instead of 'yeah'?", thinks young me. :pardon2:)

When does he say that?

Oh that

Thats suppost to be rayman saying it?
I always though that was just one of the floating voices like from the other sections of the song

I think it's him, yeah… Compare it to 26:24 in this walkthrough: https://youtu.be/qCIrybzJhHk?t=1584

Anyway, whether it's Rayman or not, it definitely sounds strange when you're not playing in French.

I can definetly confirm in german the sound is unchanged, in the highway

Yep, it's part of the OST, so the language setting can't affect it.

Well getting the name of the book right is probably a good first step.

Anyway, it's been a long since I last played Rayman 3, but I'm pretty sure stuff was lost in translation in the English dub. Just can't quite remember what.

You forgot Hebrew.
They actually changed some characters names there and some terms are not accuratly translated.

I would totally have chosen the Korean dub.

Real talk, I wish to someday hear this game in French since I know some things were lost in translation to English.

Huh, interesting. I always thought the voice sounded like "wah!", but then I thought, what a strange sound to say when jamming to a beat.
"weah" sounds pretty similar though and makes more sense!

How many dubs are there though? There's probably more than what's listed. Someone mentioned Hebrew and I have heard of a Korean version too.

A Korean version? The only ones I know about are those in the original release plus Polish, Russian and Hebrew, which I believe were localized separately. A quick search seems to indicate that this was also the case for Slovak and Czech, and possibly Ukrainian.

Yeah, in this topic dr_st pointed out that there were a few of these, but said that overall the Hebrew dub was pretty good.

Yea, I remember watching Hakyra playing through it sometime ago. Steo and I were laughing at how strangely odd Globox's scream was!

Yeah I remember Rayman just kept saying "OH!", he sounded more surprised than hurt. :P

I'll be buying L'Histoire de Rayman soon myself, it's one of the reasons I want to learn French. I've been trying to learn a little here and there, but it seems a lot harder than English, at least to me.
