Question about color swapping for Rayman 1995

Post by Theguy »

I have a very simple question, I know a little about psx modding, I am an avid Mega Man fan and found a way to edit the hex code for Zero in X6, and was wondering if anyone knows if there was a working way to color swap Raymans playable sprite to Dark Rayman. I understand that Dark Rayman doesn't have every animation that Rayman does, but there's my question. I want to play Rayman but I want to play as Dark Rayman and want to know if that's possible and if so how exactly to do that l. Thank you for taking the time to read this and hope to hear back from anyone and everyone 🙏🏻

Sadly the PS1 version is rather difficult to mod due to the data already being in the memory/vram format in the files. You could probably replace all of Rayman's sprites with those of Dark Rayman, but I think Dark Rayman also uses a separate palette which by default is only loaded in the level he should appear in. I'm not sure though. If he uses one of the allfix palettes then it would work fine.

The PC version is in general easier to mod, although you'd need the right tools for it. I did however make a mod there where you play as Dark Rayman (2:09):

Yeah, the problem with the DOS version is that some backgrounds on objects share the palette entries with Rayman, so some things tend to look weird.

I think Dark Rayman's palette uses most of the same colours for antitoons and Rayman so he'd probably work in most levels if you swapped the DES/ETA entries.

I tried something like this before where the palette would change half way through the level, the only issue was that the cages shared a background colour...
