Rayman: Timeline of Average Colors

So, inspired by sites such as "The Colors of Motion", I downloaded some longplays of Rayman 1, 2 and 3 and fed them into a script to spit out a "barcode" of colors. Each line represents the average color of a given frame throughout the game.

Since it's a 2D game, the colors stay quite consistent, and each world is easy to spot on the timeline. I was surprised the Dream Forest wasn't as vibrant as I expected, though that could stem from the blend of the turquoise background with the green/brown platforms.

Around the 33% mark, Allegro Presto's third screen sticks out with its bright blue colors, as the level is a basically a void in the sky with icy platforms here and there. Then it's followed by the very purple Blue Mountains, of which you can notice the general lack of color variety.

And around the 90% mark, you notice the deep navy blue colors of Part 2 of Space Mama's Crater, due to the thunderstorm and general darkened ambiance of the level.

Now I remember what prompted me to make this post. It's lyndo64's comment on the Rayman 2 thread, where he mentions "Rayman 2 has more of a green atmosphere", and indeed he's right.

The game is overall green, apart from the blue Sanctuary of Water and Ice, and the two lengthy levels of the Sanctuary of Rock and Lava.

Now, this one is really varied. I can't pick out the levels at a glance, except for the nighttime Fairy Council, the darker Knaaren Desert, and the white Summit Beyond the Clouds, immediately followed by the red Hoodlum Headquarters. And probably the bright white cinematics from the Axis doctors scattered throughout.

Thoughts? Enjoy!

Woah, this is interesting! I love how you can notice a sudden drop in vibrancy once R2 starts

To be honest, some things surprised me, like how diverse R2 was, but R3 mostly makes sense to me

Wow, I knew R2 wasn't very vibrant but I didn't know it was THAT dark... A little sad, to be honest.

This reminds me of a similar thing I did several years ago for Rayman 1. I exported all of the palettes used in the PC version of Rayman 1. This works nicely because each level has a single palette for everything in it. You can also see how they split up the palettes for the sprites, tiles and backgrounds :)

Rayman 3 looks darker, but there’s more diversity of colours

In my opinion it looks slightly brighter, but yeah, way more diversity

I mean, rayman 1 is the clear winner in brightness!
