PayPal General Discussion

Post by Elite Piranha »

I was planning on using a PayPal account, to transfer money to people from other countries, mainly artists. From what I know, you can set up a business account and hide your real name. Also, it would be useful to receive money if I ever do commissions.

However after watching this video, I have some concerns:

"when I receive commissions" :'(

I've paid for multiple tattoos on Paypal. They always insisted on clicking the box "this transaction is between friends" so you wouldn't have a fee.

And then, circa 2024, they started to ask for cash only (with deposit via regular bank transfer since it's now free to use instant transaction). Maybe that's why.

But yes, all those businesses whose infrastructure rely on milking money out of people (Klarna is having the same issues) are starting to see that their "costly" convenience was good when people's money wasn't tight, but now that it is they try to save money everywhere they can. Avocado toast, the ones that mainstream media swore we entitled millenials were getting everyday, ain't gonna pay for themselves.

Wait, this isn't the politics topic...

I've never really used PayPal to receive money, and I sure remember hearing a lot of horror stories about them withholding people's funds for seemingly no reason, but as a means of payment, I like the convenience, security and buyer protection. It was a long time ago, and maybe this has changed, but I was thankful I used their service to pay for a hotel on Booking.com when it turned out to be a scam and Booking wouldn't do anything about it. PayPal refunded me the whole amount.

If people are happy to send you money without buyer protection, then you're probably better off using platforms like Wise or Revolut to save on fees (whether it's merchant fees or exchange fees). And for the rest, you can always use PayPal and avoid keeping too much money in your account. This will minimize your risk and still allow more people to pay you.
