Rayman 3 Freeze mode unused descriptions

Post by TM47 »

Ok, so this is something probably the most majority of players never noticed... but while in Freeze mode, if you lock on to objects like cages or enemies, it would give you a small description.

However... it's like, really broken. Grims have the description of Hoodmongers, and many objects don't even show a description (Piggybanks, Snowmen, the 7 dwarves, gongs, Doors, Levers, etc.), even if it's in the files!

I mean, they're even translated in all localisations, so I don't have any clue, I guess they just... forgot?

Some seems to have been implemented.... kind of early, as the Hoodmonger Soldier references a purple uniform, despite the enemy being blue in the final version.

In the September 2002 build, I found out by playing that they're (barely) present.

The majority of them just says inconnu, some objects have a name (Plums, Cagoustic, Globox, Hrolk for the Heckler), the only 2 objects with full description are the Hoodmonger and the Hoodboom. The latter shows the final french description, with minor differences (the blue color for the name of the book), while the Hoodmonger is completely different.

It's not that deep, but I didn't saw this anywhere.

Oh! I found that easter egg(?) in the final game a LONG time ago, when I was still new to Rayman. I always thought it was pretty neat, but I don't think I tried it on every enemy...

It's odd that most objects and things don't have text in the final, despite them having descriptions, even translated ones! I think this is a pretty neat find!

Makes me wonder what else is hiding around...

While the game itself doesn't tell you about the feature, it is mentioned in the manual for the game. I knew about this back when I first played Rayman 3 back in the 00s because I liked to read manuals. (Always remember to RTFM)
A Little Trick (so you won’t have read this manual for nothing … )
Lock on to an enemy and activate the Freeze mode by pressing the F1 key.
If you press the V key, you’ll get some useful information that’ll help you get
rid of him.

Yes, I had seen that in the Manual too. Can't say I made much use of the feature though, because it's not something you're going to think of stopping to do during combat.

Are you sure it's this broken in the final version, TM47? I'm pretty sure everything I've ever scanned has given a valid description… :?

Also, "Le Boombolero" is interesting. There was some confusion on RayWiki before as to whether the singular form was "Boombolero" or "Boomboleros", and currently preference seems to be given to the latter… Maybe the user who has taken that name can shed some light on the matter…

Yeah im pretty sure. I practically tried to scan almost everything. Try to scan podocrocks, ninja crabs, the Rayman dwarves in the tutorial, the gong (technically it's possible by shooting a rocket), nettles and a lot of other things. It won't give you a description.

I think all of these quotes, including those from the beta, are on the wiki already. However, the wording is misleading, as it also reads "In-game description" when the text is only found in the game files, and does not appear in the game. Probably something worth fixing?

IIRC, in the french Ray Wiki it says "in-game description (unused)" so I could put it in a similar way

I second TM47, Freeze Mode was broken. At least on PC.

This Hoodlum is called "Boomboleros" in singular and plural forms in most official sources. I saw "Boomboléro" in the beta and a French trailer for Rayman 3 HD only.
We indeed had a talk about this, and the conclusion was "we use the first orthography which officially occurred".
But maybe it can be considered as another case of "both orthography are valid", like for Lums.
