Rayman Legends Actually Uses 4 Different Rayman Voice Actors

Hi everyone!
Today I'd like to share a fun piece of Rayman trivia that I've spent quite a lot of time researching.

There is a common misconception in the fandom that Doug Rand performed all voice clips in Rayman Legends (I've even seen people claim he voiced Barbara as well). While this confusion is understandable, this is not actually the case.

Part of the confusion comes from Ubisoft's credits. In Rayman Legends, Doug Rand is the only voice actor specifically credited, despite multiple voices appearing throughout the game. Unfortunately, Ubisoft has a long history of not properly crediting voice actors in the Rayman franchise, so this situation is not entirely surprising.

The most curious thing is Rayman's voice in this game, What I've found is that Rayman Legends appears to use voice clips from four different performers across its development history.

The Origins Prototype Voices
To understand Legends, we first need to go back to Rayman Origins.
During early development, Rayman did not yet have an official voice actor for the project. As a result, the developers reused existing voice clips as placeholders. These clips came from:
Rayman 3 (French voice)
The Rayman 3 beta
Rayman 4 prototype/ Rayman Raving Rabbids
The Rayman 3 voice in France was performed by Emmanuel Garijo.
The Rayman Raving Rabbids voice was performed by Pierre-Alain de Garrigues, although many fans don't know this because he was never credited in the final game.
According to an interview, Pierre talked about voicing Rayman in RRR in an interview . He also worked on early interpretations of the Teensies and helped establish a voice style for the Rabbids before Yoann Perrier ("Popo the Rabbid") was ultimately chosen to become the Rabbids' main voice performer.
You can still hear traces of Pierre's work like the rabbids in early trailers and leaked prototype builds.

Gabrielle's Version of Rayman
As Origins development progressed, the game underwent major changes and Rayman finally received a dedicated performer.
Surprisingly, that performer is Gabrielle, the writer of Rayman Origins.
This information comes from leaked Origins development scripts that identify who performed various character voices.
In this early stage, Gabrielle gave Rayman a much higher-pitched voice, somewhat reminiscent of Mario. Later in development, she reworked the performance into the version we hear in the final release of Rayman Origins.

Rayman Legends
This is where things become particularly interesting.
Evidence suggests that Rayman Legends reused some of the older prototype voice clips originally heard in early Origins development while also introducing newly recorded lines by Doug Rand.

In other words, Rayman's voice in Legends is not entirely Doug Rand's performance. Instead, the game appears to contain a mixture of:
  • Emmanuel Garijo
  • Pierre-Alain de Garrigues
  • Gabrielle
  • Doug Rand
To help demonstrate this, I created a comparison video showing the various voice clips used in Origins prototypes, the final Origins release, and Legends, along with the performers associated with each one:

The newly recorded lines in Legends sound very similar to Doug Rand's other voice work.

In fact, on one of his videos, a commenter complimented him on his "Rayman Origins" voice, and Doug responded with a heart reaction. Doug may have simply confused Origins with Legends, especially since a large portion of Legends' development was originally known internally as "Rayman Origins 2."

Of course, because these games were not properly credited and documentation is limited, it is difficult to establish every detail with complete certainty. However, based on the currently available evidence, this appears to be the most accurate explanation for why Rayman's voice sounds different across various clips in Legends.
Thank you for reading!
Special thanks to Droolie for helping me research and verify much of the information presented here.

This is absolutely fascinating to me. So Doug Rand does not voice Rayman in Origins at all? And some of these voice clips I've been listening to for fifteen years actually came from the game's female writer?

Not only that, but I recognize some of Garijo's voice lines from Rayman 3--which means they actually left some of his work in the English dub of the game. I just find this stuff so intriguing. Does that mean we don't know exactly who voiced Barbara and the Teensies?

It's completely unknown who voiced Barbara; The Playable Teensy were apparently voiced by Doug Rand, as was the Polokus in Origins and legends ^_^ (In fact, I think the reason he was the only one credited was because of his voice in the Legends intro lol).

I find it funny that Emmanuel and Pierre probably don't know Ubisoft used their voices in the game ToT, Ubisoft seriously sucked at giving credits
