Art Ludique - Le Musée

Art Ludique - Le Musée, (lit. Playful art - The museum.) Is a musuem in Paris, France.

Art Ludique held an exhibition called "L'Art dans le jeu vidéo" (Art in the video game), which ran from September 2015 to March 2016 and included much art from the Rayman series.

While videos were released covering the subject, unfortunately, they are only in French.

Teensies

The Teensies (singular Teensie or Teensy) are a magical race of ancient, diminutive and wise creatures, created by Polokus to watch over the secret ways of the Glade of Dreams. They are frequently encountered throughout the Rayman series, starting with Rayman 2.

Teensies are short compared to most glade inhabitants and are characterised by their grey-blue skin and long, drooping noses, which overlap their mouths and are marked with elegant blue spiral patterns. Their eyes are black and beady and they have small, four-digit hands. Their large noses give them a keen ability to smell magic, as well as a tendancy to snore.

The Teensies were created by Polokus to oversee the many passages of the world. After the fairies, they were the second race to be created, and as such are among the most ancient inhabitants of the world. Long before the events of the Rayman games, the Teensies created the Hall of Doors, a magic place where all paths eventually meet. Most, if not all Teensies have the ability to create Spiral Doors; these portals can quickly take a Teensie (or other character, such as Rayman) from one location to one another. The Teensies can harness the power of Yellow Lums collected by Rayman to create Spiral Doors or open sealed doors that lead Rayman to the Sanctuaries.

Rayman

Rayman is the main protagonist and title character of the Rayman series created by Ubisoft game designer Michel Ancel.

Personality

Rayman has a friendly and carefree disposition, though his personaliy changes somewhat over the course of the games.

In Rayman 1 he seems cheerful and child-like, having an innocent expression and pulling a silly face as a means of defense.

In Rayman 2 he showed a more serious side, taking his mission seriously while remaining friendly. The Rayman 2 manual described him as particularly lively with an intense love of life, indicating he might usually be more cheerful if the situation weren't as serious.

In Rayman 3 he seems slightly more impatient, aloof and cocky, showing some exasperation with Murphy and Globox, though shows worry when Globox appears in danger and comforts him when sad. The Rayman 3 manual describes him as lazy; loving to sleep, mess around with friends and not take things seriously. It remarks that he doesn't really act like a big hero, though the Rayman 3 manual is characterised as having an opinion of it's own, this seems partially true.

As of Rayman Origins, Rayman is an energetic, childish and fun-loving character that likes to beat up his enemies and spar with friends.

Appearance

Rayman is best known for his lack of limbs and neck, having a large head, hands and feet that are nonetheless connected to his body, as if by magic. He has a large, snout-like nose, wears white gloves, yellow skeakers and a purple suit with a white "O" shape on the front. Most recently he appears with a red hood and fluffy ginger hair that sticks up in two fringe-like locks. Though in Rayman 1 and 2, Rayman sports a red kercheif where his neck would be and blonde hair. While usually his eyes are shown black, his eyes are blue in Rayman 2.

Conception

Rayman was originally designed by Michel Ancel and was originally conceived as an avatar character for human boy, called Jimmy. Jimmy created a virtual world on his computer called Hereitscool. When Hereitscool gets infected by a virus, Jimmy must enter his virtual world, and take on the persona of Rayman in order to defeat the virus. Rayman was originally designed with limbs but there technical issues that where hard to correct, so he was designed limbless instead.

Roles

Rayman 1

Rayman lives in The Valley with other limbless people, his journey starts when Betilla and The Magician call on Rayman to retreive The Great Protoon from Mr Dark, who has stolen it.

Rayman 2

Rayman lives in The Glade of Dreams amongst limbed creatures, and curiously, he is said to be the only of his kind, with no-one knowing where he comes from.

Rayman and the people of the Glade are captured by robotic space pirates and Rayman must escape in order to save the people. He goes on a quest to collect the four masks awaken the god, Polokus so he can kill the pirates.

Rayman 3

Again The Glade of Dreams. Rayman sets out to defeat André, a black lum who is attempting to take over the world with his army of hoodlums.

Rayman Raving Rabbids games

In Rayman's Raving Rabbids, Rayman is captured by rabbids, a race of anthropomorphic, rabbit-like creatures who force him to participate in games for their entertainment.

Rayman Raving Rabbids 2 curiously seems to be set on Earth, where Rayman attempts to infiltrate the rabbids' attempts to take over the world.

In Rayman Raving Rabbids TV party, Rabbids invade Rayman's television and force him to watch their TV shows.

Rayman Origins and Legends

Rayman and friends disturb the Land of The Livid dead with their snoring, and have to deal with the army of antitoons and monsters that are sent up from it's depths. As the game progresses it becomes clear the Teensie Magician is an enemy. Unsused dialogue reveals his name is Ales Mansey and that he's a follower of Mr Dark who wishes to overthrow Polokus. Rayman is shown to have been created by Betilla.

As of Rayman Legends, Rayman and his friends have been asleep for a hundred years, meanwhile, Polokus's nightmares have been multiplied. The heroes must awake to defeat the nightmares.

Abilities

Rayman's main form of attack is his fists, which he can extend a long distance to attack enemies, this and his ability to use his hair as a helicopter were introduced in Rayman 1 and have been a staple since. In Rayman 1, Rayman has the ability to pull a silly face an incite frenzy into enemies. He can also use blue fairies to help him shrink.

The exception to Rayman's fist ability is Rayman 2, where offensive magic spheres are used as the sole attack.

Rayman 3 introduces the concept of combat fatigues, Rayman uses magic washing detergeant to transform his clothes and use different abilities. Later in the game, Rayman gains the ability to pull a silly face and make black lums laugh, which turns them into red lums.

Rayman Origins introduces the ability to run on walls, a power given to him by a nymph.

The circle on Rayman's chest appears to be the source of Rayman's powers, it's through this which he gains powers from Betilla, or silver lums from Ly. This circle appears to serve as some sort of key that allows him to obtain the Masks of Polokus and appears in several places carved into stone, indicating it has importance in Rayman's world.

Relationships

Rayman's best known friendship is that with Globox, Globox was introduced in Rayman 2 and the two have been best friends since. In the Rayman Origins reveal trailer, Betilla describes Rayman and Globox becoming friends before the events of Rayman 2, and that their adventures have become legends and myths.

Ly was shown to be in a romantic relationship with Rayman before the events of Rayman 2, starring in "the most romantic wallpaper ever seen"[1] on Rayman2.com, though the game itself doesn't show them in this way. It's questionable wether they were supposed to be in a romantic relationship in the final revision.

Rayman 2 Prototype

Rayman sneaks in on the robots.

Rayman 2 was initially intended to be a 2D game and would expand directly on the aesthetics and gameplay of Rayman. This version of the game was intended to be released for the Sega Saturn, Sony Playstation and Personal Computer.[1]

A playable level level of this prototype is available in Rayman 2:The Great Escape for the Playstation 1.[2]

Story

No official story has been mentioned directly by Ubisoft, though magazines mention that the limbless robot enemies are invaders from space and wish to cover Rayman's world with metal.[3]

The robots' leader is a purple robot known only as "Chief" to fans[4], he has shape resembling a muscular male with wide shoulders, a single visor-like eye and is always seen with a cigar.

Gameplay

An important gimmick in this game was that Rayman and enemies could travel between the foreground and background. Rayman achieved this by using teleporters, while enemies would jump between the planes or shoot Rayman from both the background and foreground.

Gameplay would include Rayman's fist ability, ring grab, hover and grimace, and presumably the ability to run, though Rayman does not start with this.

New mechanics include timid platforms, which would shy away from Rayman and would need to be tethered with Raymans fist ability, these could also be pulled into position. Rayman could also use a canon to shoot cannonballs into the background and in the playable demo, Rayman uses this canon to shoot cannonballs onto a sticky wall, which he can then climb up.

Floating mines would need to be avoided or pushed, and could be used to destroy path entrances.
