Rayman (sometimes known as Rayman 1) is Rayman's debut game, and was first released in 1995 on the Atari Jaguar, Sony PlayStation, Sega Saturn, and on MS-DOS. A port for the Game Boy Color was released in 2000, followed by a port for the Game Boy Advance that was later released in 2001, in which it was renamed Rayman Advance. In 2008, the game was released on the PlayStation Network as a downloadable PSOne Classic, for Sony PlayStation 3 and Sony PlayStation Portable. | Rayman (sometimes known as Rayman 1) is Rayman's debut game, and was first released in 1995 on the Atari Jaguar, Sony PlayStation, Sega Saturn, and on MS-DOS. Gameloft made a game called Rayman Ultimate for the Pocket PC. The game used the original PlayStation format of it. Gameloft also released Rayman 1 (GBC) for Windows Mobile and Palm OS. Rayman Ultimate however, can be downloaded online. The Learning Company remade the game as a complete download, and is available for the Apple's Mac OS X. This will be the first Rayman game to be available on an Apple operating system along with Rayman 3 and Raving Rabbids. | Gameloft made a game called Rayman Ultimate for the Pocket PC. Rayman 1 (GBC) was also ported only for the Nokia 9210. Evidence of this can be found on www.rayman-fanpage.de. Rayman 1 can run on later Windows systems with the help of DOS-BOX.
==Development== | |||
Early in its life, Rayman was going to be about an eleven-year-old boy named Jimmy. Jimmy takes advantage of the realms that he discovers within his computer to create a fantasy world called Hereitscool. When evil invades Hereitscool, Jimmy turns into a superhero named Rayman to save Hereitscool. This idea was scrapped, and Rayman is his own being in his own world in the final version. There were a few comments in the story, such as "Sorry folks, this appearance can't last. Do you want to play or what?", but they were cut for the final version.

==Final Jaguar Outcome==
The first Atari Jaguar version adds new areas and removes some of the ones available in the PC/Playstation/Saturn/GBA games. For example, in Blue's Mountain, the level Mr. Stone's Peaks is missing the second area entirely where Rayman has to cut 2 ropes with his Helicopter Hair before a stone ceiling crushes Rayman into the water. Also, in Picture City, the level Eraser Plains retains the 3rd area but it has been changed to a completely different place. The last world (Candy Chateau) also features completely restructured areas compared to the other ports. The Electoon cages found on the removed areas were moved to previous or further areas of the stage. The ability to shrink is also missing from this version and one of the last boss phases (Space Mamas) has been completely ignored. Also, Rayman can't slide on bells in Band Land and ice in Blue Mountain.
==All Rayman 1 Ports== | |||
Rayman 1(PC, PS1, and Saturn) were all very similar except for the game controls. The Atari Jaguar port has some changes made from the PS1 version as mentioned above. The Rayman Advance port has similar qualities to the Playstation and PC versions. The music, however, is of lesser quality due to the GBA's limitations. Also, Rayman, instead of having three or five energy points, has four or six. Ubisoft also released [Rayman (GBC)|port for the Game Boy Color]], which contained all the Rayman 2 music, but had the storyline of Rayman. It also had a feature called Ubi Key. It's where you select a valid code using symbols and letters to go to a certain level.
As mentioned above, Rayman 1 can be downloaded off the PS Network for the PS3 and PSP. Rayman 1, 3 and Ravving Rabbids are remade as complete download for the Mac OS X. The PS1 version was ported directly for the Mac OS X. Gameloft ported Rayman to four mobile phones. They ported Rayman 1 (GBC) to the Windows Mobile(CE), Nokia 9210, and the Palm OS. Rayman Ultimate, using the PS1 format, was ported to the Pocket PC. It can be downloaded as a demo, and then if liked the user can buy the full version of it. The game, with the help of DOS-BOX, can be played on later windows systems.
==Reception== | |||
Rayman was awarded both Best Music in a CD-ROM Game and Best Animation in Electronic Gaming Monthly's 1995 video game awards. Rayman is the best selling PlayStation game of all time in the UK, beating titles like Gran Turismo and Tomb Raider 2. On Gamespot, the rating was a 7.4 out of 10.
There have been fan games made or in the making, but a lot of them have been abandon.
