Re: Rayman Legends

You know, the new series are better than nothing. But I think not even Origins was that good. Don't get me wrong, I don't mean to speak for everyone else but I do get the feeling that many people only bought Rayman Origins because it was the oh so long-awaited return of Rayman. But being honest, the gameplay wasn't that innovating and it didn't even have a good plot. It was just Rayman making a comeback on a colorful scene. So even if that worked at first, I don't think it deserved a sequel, specially if it's not going to have a story either. And as much as I love having Rayman back, I'm affraid that a third Origins-like game would only make people forget more about Rayman's glory days. Rayman 1 was challenging, RO and RL are not without a life and continue system. So MY idea (and I don't mean to sound "selfish" or anything) of an objetively good Rayman game would be a 3D sequel to Rayman 3 where the magical aura of Rayman 2 is recovered and they continue the story from where they left it: André and Reflux's defeat.

Not just that. Ubisoft also did invest in marketing/publicity for this game, in a way you were listening about Rayman Origins almost everywhere, including seeing it as a cover theme in gaming magazines. It definitely contributed for the game selling well outside the Rayman fandom core.

The gameplay was definitely not a novelty. The co-op mechanics are quite similar to New Super Mario Bros. for Wii, that got released an year or two earlier if I remember well. Now the plot... with all the respect to Miss Gabrielle Shragger, I wonder what was her job in the end. I believe the decision to fuse the episode releases into a full game harmed a lot the story department.

While Rayman Legends was a superior game with many improvements, it ended as a commercial failure. Not just for the significatively lower ammount of publicity but the two delays mixed along with the initial exclusivity to Wii U only made things worse. In short, it did not work well. And so, I also don't think a Rayman Origins 3 or a Rayman Legends 2 will work. It is time to move on for different projects, strategies or even, although less likely, creating a new engine.

RO/RL are only challenging in later levels and when you are doing a blind walkthrough, after that the challenges disappears completely. I personally don't feel wanting to repeat both games soon, unless if I was recording a walkthrough for a different platform with significant changes to the ones I did.

The L'Histoire of Rayman hinted that elements and concepts created for the canceled Rayman 4 might seen the light of the day in future, so who knows? As I expressed before, I would be happy to see a R1 in HD á lá New 'N' Tasty if not a real 3D sequel of the limbless wonder.

If they continue to use UbiART, I feel like it might have the chance to evolve into a full 3D engine. That would be pretty swell.

Well, UbiArt has seen its capabilities been explored further with Child of Light and that WWI game whose name escapes my heads, perhaps it may next evolve into that. Or perhaps not, who can tell what's to come with things as they are?

We know that UbiArt can handle 3D models as shown in Legends, so there is a possibility.

When I saw more 3D elements being implemented in RL one of my first thoughts was that they were probably trying to turn UbiArt framework into a powerful engine for 3D games. Maybe it would be cool to see a 3D Rayman made with UbiArt, but I don't think such a cortoonish look would do well in a 3D Rayman game. But who knows?

You're just tassling my tangerines all over the place. What the hell do you mean Rayman wouldn't work well in a cartoonish look!? Do you know what franchise you are speaking about?! Rayman, in its entirety, has always look cartoony! From Rayman 1 to Rayman Legends, all of them have had a cartoony feel! Even Michel Ancel said he was going for a Tex Avery style to the first game! Rayman 2 and 3 have luscious worlds (ew, I can't believe I just said that about Rayman 2), but how they're designed still give a cartoonish look.

Look at the crates in this screenshot. Don't they seem a bit wonky to you?!

Oh, that looks ordinary.

What I think you're trying to say is that the silly tone of the UbiArt games won't suit a 3D game. In which case I bring up the E3 CGI trailer for Rayman Legends.

With all respect, I think Origins and Legends provide the same amount of fantasy and magical elements from the first three games, though it also has a lot of cartoon slapstick which can "ruin the mood". But look at the landscapes that the trailer above showcases.

They turned this

Into this:

And just look at the models made for the trailer.

These models are absolutely gorgeous and so well made, crafted with such detail. Granted, these weren't made for a game, but we can having something just as good these. It's a shame that both Origins and Legends sold poorly, because of that we and the general gaming audience gave the idea to Ubisoft that we don't want to see Rayman in home console games anymore. Instead of dwelling into what was before, we should want to see what the next Rayman game has to offer. That's what's so unique about the Rayman franchise.

It evolves.

No two games in the series are alike. Each entry in the series takes it and puts something new and refreshing. Rayman 2 took a leap into the Third Dimension, Rayman 3 added much more; such as power ups, higher resolution, and fully rendered cut scenes. Rayman Origins added Co-Op and made the debut of the UbiArt engine, which has created 3 other games. Legends upgraded the engine, added Online functionality to the series, and improved Origins' gameplay in many ways.

To end my post, I'm just clarifying that whatever tone the next game is, no matter what, Rayman is and has been a cartoony series. Some more than others, but whatever. They're fun games that we enjoy. End.

I hope that if the next game makes it a trilogy, the title sounds like a citrus fruit like the other two.

I can already see next Rayman game starting with Ales getting off the moon :P

Something makes me think that Ubisoft won't invest into 3D Rayman game and will stick to only 2D ones at least for another 5 years because they don't think he is profitable enough to spend money on making 3D game. Heck, we might not even see Rayman on home consoles for some time sadly.

Now that you mention Ales, there's something that's been bugging me. I've seen it written that Ales himself somehow survived the explosion of the factory and proceeded to make five copies of himself, who become the villains of Legends. However, when I watched the intro to Rayman Legends, the impression I got was that a nightmare of Polokus resurrected Ales (who hadn't survived), and then multiplied, as all the other nightmares were doing. I'm pretty sure what we see is Ales rising in just another bubble from Polokus's pipe, and splitting into five before it bursts. Thoughts?

I didn't mean that by cartoonish. The look in that trailer is definitely not the same that we can see in RO and RL. UbiArt seems to make the games look like that have been handrawn. And that's what I don't think could work in a 3D game. Neither that or cell-shading would be my cup of tea. Of course Rayman 1, 2 and 3 were cartoonish, but not in the same way as RO and RL.

It is plausible, knowing that after the explosion, he doesn't appear side to the test tube to collect the Lums. Maybe Polokus had a nightmare in those following 100 years that involved Ales and as a result it multiplied him. I found the clones a lazy addition, something that could have been done better. In my humble opinion, Ubisoft managed to create a Rayman villain that manages to be more annoying than André.

It's most likely impossible to make such assumptions. The 3D game we were all waiting for could very well be announced tomorrow out of the blue, or never be announced ever, for all we know.. Not saying it's stupid to make assumptions, but we should all know by experience that almost every time, it turns out not quite as expected. Guess we can hope that Ubisoft listen to their fans and decide to do something, without it ending in a disaster (*cough* Paper Mario Sticker Star *cough*) . Personally I'm still very grateful that those friggin' rabbids were ruled out, but I admit I wouldn't say no to something more... different than Origins and Legends, gameplay and story wise.

I would have said that PluM is 100% correct if Rayman was made by Capcom, but given the stagnation of every Ubisoft franchise (just look at Assassin's Creed, and to a lesser extent Rayman Legends), he still has a point.

I find your unnecessary reaction to my unnecessary aggressive reactions very unnecessarily unnecessary.

The UbiArt games aren't that cel-shaded, clearly Origins is but Legends? It isn't. And the trailer isn't Cel Shaded at all. Wanna see a 3D Cel Shaded gaem, look at Wind Waker. You'll see the difference.

Also, anyone here can give me the voice clips of Dark Rayman and Barbara? Pls.

Hey I have a question for anyone that has the WiiU version. Is Funky Ray actually only unlockable if I had had the stupid challenges app way before I actually owned a WiiU?

I see on the RaymanPC wiki it says you can get the Funky Ray skin by unlocking all of the paintings and going to UPlay. Is that legit for WiiU or does that only work for PS4 and Xbone versions?

Nope, for Wii U owners you needed to have the Challenge app. Only Xbox One and PS4 can get Funky Ray by Uplay and completing the paintings.

You can always ask Drolpiraat. I am not sure if he extracted the sound files of Legends yet but I know he did for Origins before.

I haven't extracted the sounds from Legends, since they're in a not-so-common format in the PC version. The X360 version has extractable sounds but I'd rather not redownload it and unpack the whole thing just for a few sounds. It'd probably be easier to just record them off Youtube. :)
